SilverStone's Retro Beige PC Case Turns April Fools' Joke into Actual Product (techspot.com) 33

Slashdot reader jjslash shared this report from TechSpot: The SilverStone FLP01 made quite the impression when it was shared on X for April Fools' Day 2023. Loosely modeled after popular desktops from yesteryear like the NEC PC-9800 series, the chassis features dual 5.25-inch faux floppy bays that could stand to look a bit more realistic. Notably, the covers flip open to reveal access to a more modern (yet still legacy) optical drive and front I/O ports.

Modern-looking fan grills can be found on either side of the desktop, serving as yet another hint that the chassis is not as old at it appears on first glance. The grills look to be removable, and probably hold washable dust filters. Like early desktops, the system doubles as a stand for your monitor. The use of a green power LED up front helps round out the retro look; a red LED is used as a storage activity indicator.

The case looks to be an updated Silverstone GD09 in beige instead of black. I wonder if they'll sell replacement faces.

I got a Silverstone GD09 for two reasons: one, because it takes a full sized ATX motherboard, and two, it's a rare horizontally sitting case. As a bonus, it fits perfectly in a rackmount case on a shelf. The fans mean my old AMD Bulldozer system stays cool, even when running all eight cores at 100%.

    Love to see it :)

I wish it had more 5.25" bays, and they were proper bays. They are very useful for NAS use because you can get hot-plug enclosures for 3.5" and 2.5" drives, and for NVMe SSDs. You can also fit tape drives and optical drives which are useful for backup.

Unfortunately all NAS cases have their own special hot-plug bays that are almost always exclusively for 3.5" drives. Right now we are migrating from 3.5" HDDs to 2.5" SSD to NVMe SSDs, so the flexibility would be very welcome.

    • I note that you specified full ATX, but since you mentioned horizontal cases and airflow I want to mention the Thermaltake Core V21 here. That's what I'm using now because I too wanted a horizontal motherboard mount (GPUs are heavy now) and airflow. This case is big enough to take multiple liquid coolers and has a bunch of magnetic dust screens. It has no accessible drive bays, though, which might bother some people. I believe you can also order it either with a window side or another mesh side.

    • I got a GD07, mostly because my wife liked it better than the 09. It's actually upright on the left side since ages, so the big case fans on the right side are at the top (one of them is connected as CPU fan, with a fanless copper cooler / heatsink with heatpipes on the CPU), and the bottom fans are at the right. Since it's in the desk cabinet, there's very little dust accumulating on the side (top) filters, and essentially none on the bottom (side) filters, which used to get clogged much more when it was s

There's no "TURBO" button! What's even the point of living without a turbo button? /s

Realistically speaking, it wouldn't take much to actually make such a button functional as an overclocking mechanism.

    • The 'reset' button is recessed on the left, there's nothing stopping you from plugging that into a GPIO or other header on your system instead to do exactly that. :D

    • They should totally add a Turbo button to the next version, with a working LED light. It would be kind of fun if it disabled all but 1 core.

If the front bay pushbuttons don't extend the cup holders, the thing seems pointless.
  • Someone should post an April Fool's joke about retro non-corrupt political system and see if there's traction.

  • of their existing HTPC cases. Kinda cool I guess.
