An anonymous reader quotes a report from Reuters: OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday said an energy breakthrough is necessary for future artificial intelligence, which will consume vastly more power than people have expected. Speaking at a Bloomberg event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Altman said the silver lining is that more climate-friendly sources of energy, particularly nuclear fusion or cheaper solar power and storage, are the way forward for AI. "There's no way to get there without a breakthrough," he said. "It motivates us to go invest more in fusion."
In 2021, Altman personally provided $375 million to private U.S. nuclear fusion company Helion Energy, which since has signed a deal to provide energy to Microsoft in future years. All the problems with AI will always be solved by "bigger models" or "more training" and, of course, throwing more money at it.
Driverless cars are a great example. All the examples of them behaving weirdly is their version of the "hallucinations" of LLMs. Only they have serious power constraints, so you'll probably end up in a place where tuning the model to cover a new scenario winds up losing something else.

Tesla now has several billion times more data than it did when it started with FSD. Despite this, the quality of driving has not improved several billion times. Hm, interesting. I'm helping a little in some bits of experiments at CERN (particle physics), and I haven't heard anything about fusion fusion, that is, the one for energy production. We already have all the tools we need. There is some more development to do with deep water offshore wind turbines, but even those are now pretty mature and in mass production. We know how to transport energy over long distances with HV DC lines.
If Altman wants more power for AI he can just build it himself. Solar panels, windmills, batteries. Stop complaining and get on with it.

The 800mb was referring to the data needed to describe the architecture. As for 86 TB .. that sounds way to high. I believe the memory requirements are a lot less than that. Probably in the GB range if not less. How much data do you think it would take to record everything you can remember? 90% of a day's memories are discarded within a day or two. You probably only remember 5 minutes (averaged out) of any given day 1 year ago. Furthermore .. you don't remember even those 5 minutes in photographic detail ..

If my back-of-the-envelope estimates are correct, 800 MB would allow you to have something as clever as a honey bee (which has around 600K neurons). Note that this is no small feat, given the amount of things that a bee can do completely autonomously. It would make for a incredibly smart drone, for instance.
You're looking at the information content, not the build complexity. The information needed to build a 1TB drive is much less than the 1TB of data that goes into it. The executable of a database is much smaller than the data it manages.
The human genome holds about 800 MB of information (3 billion base pairs of 4 nucleotides), and of that about 3/4 is fundamental architecture for things like metabolism.

No, we needefficiency, which will come. Better models, continuing hardware improvements, etc.. It is already possible to run smaller models on an ordinary PC, soon enough, they will fit on a smartphone.
FWIW, training is nearly irrelevant. Models are used far more often that they are trained.

At the scale they seem to need to do it, it is not clear that hardware/software gain efficiency are the whole solution. Don't get me wrong we should do it. But our current ML stacks are already using our hardware decently well. That's the point where I don't expect we can really gain more than a factor 100 anymore.
And based on the type of usage that they believe we'll get, we more likely need to gain factors in energy consumption in the order of a million.
And training is not that irrelevant. If you look at the cost of training the final model that gets deployed. Yes, that's pretty negligible. But to have an honest metric, to train one model, you typically tried thousands, maybe millions of variants on hyper parameters. And that definitely takes time and power.
Even though I agree that eventually, commercially, the cost of running inference will have to be much smaller than the (full) cost of training, simply to be commercially viable.

Not an expert, but I don't think this is right. The problem is not the coding. It's the current software architectures and hardware architectures. The mainstream hardware architectures were never designed for this kind of massive parallel computation. And the software architectures are just not right, they're grossly inefficient compared to wetware. The human brain learns continually, it's not using back propagation.

Yeah a definite case of the studio thinking the audience isn't just stupid but very stupid. I think the scene in question where Morpheus holds up a battery and says "to turn a human being into this" if he had held up a microchip or a CPU most people would get it and it tracks so much better with the philosophical issues they try to wrestle with the latter two films.
I would contend the first Matrix is a "good" movie, I had recently re-watched in the first time in a decade and was expecting it not hold up as well as it did.
It's very well paced and introduces it's mystery box elements well, the fight choreography is good, the casting is good with a compelling villain, the production absolutely has a unique sense of style, even the green color grading was unique to it at the time (movies afterward all gaped the idea from it) and even the effects mostly hold up.
Even if the high level concept can get a little silly the on the ground concept works. I think it get's drug down a bit unfairly by it's own sequels and how many tropes it's inspired in other, worse films.
Also let's appreciate that it's one of those few films that when it shows "hacking" it actually shows something quasi realistic like just a terminal window.

It's a sci-fi element of their story that humans are somehow needed for the fusion thing to work.
From memory they were required to do the whole VR thing to prevent something akin to crop failure so it seems undeveloped brain dead humans were not of use to them.
I can understand someone calling bullshit to a nuclear reactor exploding as if it were an atomic bomb in resident evil yet faulting the introduction of physics, gadgets and technology to further a fictional sci-fi plot line is quite a different story.

True, two of them did. But one of the others was from CSIRO, the Australian Government science arm, and another from a think tank. Neither have been known to push anti-nuclear barrows before.
In the mean time in the real world (ie verifiable real world data) efforts to roll out new nuclear haven't gone well. For example people like to point to China, who had a plan to roll out 30 new nuclear reactors by 2030.

Crypto had absolutely no legal use-case at scale. Nearly all transactions were automated and speculative and the only real world transactions that it was used for were for drug sales. AI is the exact same thing. Chatbots are awful managers, customer agents, friends, etc...but they're great for online fraudsters running swarms of social media accounts. It's great for the guy filling your inbox with spam. It's great for the psychopath sending you phishing text messages.

You only need power to train models. Once you train a perfect or near-perfect AGI model.... how much power do you need to run it? Survey says about 100w instantaneous which is about what a human generates. But it only needs 100w when doing an actual task, which is usually 3-20 seconds at a time, a couple times an hour. How much do you use chatgpt?
I suspect there will be a huge spike in power needs, but actually running the model will be less than 20w per person per day
