Apparent Schematics For Meta's Project Cambria Headset Leak (uploadvr.com) 32

An anonymous reader quotes a report from UploadVR: YouTuber SadlyItsBradley (Brad Lynch) shared apparent internal schematics for Meta's upcoming Project Cambria headset. Project Cambria is the public codename for Meta's upcoming high end standalone headset, announced at Connect 2021 in October. It will be sold alongside Quest 2 with a price tag "significantly" higher than $800, aimed at remote workers and mixed reality early adopters. In October Meta confirmed it had already sent development kits out.

The headset looks to have a more balanced design than Quest 2 with a slimmer visor achieved through the use of pancake lenses instead of fresnel lenses. It has higher resolution cameras with color and a depth sensor for mixed reality, as well as built-in face and eye tracking to drive avatars in social experiences like Workrooms. In April supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed Project Cambria will have dual 2160x2160 Mini LED LCD panels and launch in the second half of this year (between July and December). And import logs found by Lynch, Samulia and Reggy04 suggest it will have 12 GB RAM, up from Quest 2's 6 GB.
Lynch posted six shematics of Project Cambria on his Patreon page if you're interested in checking them out. According to UploadVR, they appear to show some interesting features "including a dial at the front (perhaps used to adjust the lenses), a clip on the side (seemingly for Oculus Link) and a visible cable at the rear (likely connecting the battery to the components in front)."

  • Today Lynch posted six schematics of Project Cambria, seemingly CAD files, on his Patreon page.

    This may have been a bad decision... leaking is one thing, selling access to leaked materials is quite another

    • I was thinking the same thing. Charging people to view stolen schematics doesn't seem very smart.

      Stuff can be released for free on Patreon to non-supporters too, so that's not really an issue. While most Patreon users lock everything so only supporters get it, there are free things people put up too that anyone can link to and read and such.

      The bigger issue is that Patreon is completely non-anonymous - as in, they will have the guy's real banking information and real address and real name. That

    Meta track record on privacy and security is quite poor, it isn't like businesses who want to keep their trade secretes private would go to them.

      In terms of general use that is true.

      However Facebook still has quite a lot of young users because of Facebook Groups, which there is not anything like on other more popular social media platforms.. I still see a lot of younger people using Facebook Groups, even if they do not use it for anything else.

      Who said anything about a social network? I know 5 people with Oculus headsets, all under the age of 35 (one of them 15), and all have Facebook accounts. Precisely none of them use a social network.

      Don't confuse "having an account" with "using Facebook". VR is showing very healthy year on year growth for a new technology, mostly to younger people.

      It seems you know very little about business. Every data hoovering, end user toxic company you can think of has a completely different offering just for businesses

  • Smaller than some headsets I've seen, but it still looks like a substantial piece of hardware to have mounted on your noggin for a long work or play session. And you won't go far with the cable plugged into it.

    It made me a little dizzy just watching the video, but maybe it has enough compute horsepower to keep up with head and eye movements. At a price "significantly" higher than $800 it is likely to be a novelty item with a few niche applications.

      Like a bike helmet or hardhat? Can't see people tolerating those for very long, and definitely not when working or playing.

      The Quest 2 is already crazy popular and people do lots of gaming on it, way more than would be considered a novelty. More like having a second gaming device, like a handheld to complement a console.

      • A shame it's popular, not looking forward to battling with my kids about not getting this shit that will probably ruin their eyesight. Oldest is 5, so hopefully this wave of VR rubbish dies out again before he's old enough to know about it and want one.

          well, they won't be the first child having a father/mother with prejudices, they'll survive ;-)

          pro tip: sensible vr use will ruin your sight exactly as much as sensible computer use in general: not at all. further, just like any such activity, vr gaming or content watching can be a mind expanding and stimulating experience or a pathological evasion, and as a loving parent that's the part you should care about.

          • Sadly sounds like his kid is going to have VR fun at a friend's house, and come up with excuses as to why his dad irrationally won't get him one. Perhaps arguments like "all my friends use it and their eyes are fine!" or "I'm missing out on hanging out with my friends, because they're all in this social VR game and having fun!" will work.

        A hat isn't the same as a face-mounted headset, far less obtrusive. But sure, some people may be able to tolerate it. I've fooled around with a Quest 2, it was fine for about 30 minutes.

        • A hat is far more comfortable than a helmet, and people wear those for hours.

          A Quest 2 without upgrades isn't very comfortable. It pushes on the front of your face and is quite unbalanced. There are far more comfortable headsets out there, and new ones should only get better and better.

            I suspect this Meta headset will cost in the vicinity of $1000, well out of the range of most gamers. The Quest 2 is popular at $300, a $1000 headset will mostly be a novelty for the very few even if it has high resolution and processing power. To appeal to the Facebook crowd it will have to be very inexpensive.

            • The rumor is that it'll be $800, and is targeting the next level up from the Quest 2. They'll likely have a cheaper headset or version to get closer to that $300 price point, but they were selling the Quest 2 at a loss--and ESPECIALLY would be now if a new headset is that price, due to inflation and chip shortages.

              The targeted market isn't the Facebook crowd though, it's young people and early adopters. And young people use the shit out of the Quest 2

                Meta is Facebook, Instagram, etc. Social media is their customer base and it is who they are targeting. They will need to make these gadgets significantly more compelling if they want those people to adopt it, and I am thinking something along the aesthetic of google glasses or smaller with a price of under $200. The gamer crowd is adequately serviced by Quest-level headsets.

      I'd expect someone watching somebody else's head-mounted display to get dizzy. What you'd be missing is the kinesthetic sensation of moving your head, etc., that the wearer presumably has or had.

  • ... this isn't going to cut it. needs to be A LOT slicker, and cost 10x less.

    • Slickness yes, price... no it'll fly off the shelves at over half the price easily. You're living in a fantasy world if you think you're going to see this at 10x less (I assume you mean 1/10th the price) in the next 2 decades. For 10x less you can't even get a decent keyboard or mouse.

        my expectations about this whole thing coming to fruit were a bit more optimistic at 10-15 years, but yeah, 2 decades is in the ballpark i guess!

  • Could be interesting, but I sure as all hell am not deliberately gonna put spyware into my network.

  • The new lense design could be huge. The existing Farnell lenses have distortions lines and light rays. These might have none. The headstrap is along the lines of Quest 2 aftermarket straps - with forehead support. nice touch. Last but not least - looks like they added 2 cameras in the straps looking down at your arms. This will really help hand tracking as Quest 2 constantly looses your hand if you drop them too low/to your sides.
  • I had an interesting reaction to this article. I've realized that when it comes to Facebook/Meta I've moved through stages:

    - Awareness
    - Trepidation, decision to never engage
    - Resistance of pressure from family/friends
    - Suspicion that the bad of the thing vastly outweighs any benefit provided
    - Growing belief in the cartoonish villany of Zuckerberg
    - Perplexed at the stock offering and behaviour
    - Surprised that so many companies got on board with "Meta" as buzzword and marketing target
