Microsoft's Surface Laptop Go Successor Leaks Via Retailer

Microsoft looks set to announce an updated version of its compact Surface Laptop Go, if an early retailer listing from Korea is to be believed. From a report: The biggest change with the Surface Laptop Go 2 appears to be its newer 11th-gen Intel CPU (an i5-1135G7), which replaces the 10th-gen model found in the original 2020 laptop. The Go 2 will ship with Windows 11 this time around, and a Google Translate of the retailer page says its webcam will have "improved HD camera performance." Preorders are set to open on June 2nd, so an official announcement might not be far away. WinFuture previously reported that the laptop could have a starting price of $650. Otherwise, the new laptop appears to be very similar to its predecessor. It still has a 12.4-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, the same selection of ports (USB-A, USB-C, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a port for Microsoft's proprietary charger), and a fingerprint sensor that's still built into the power button on select models. There's no sign of a backlit keyboard, which was an unfortunate omission on the first Laptop Go.

Not really sure why this story qualifies as news. An incremental upgrade to a lineup that has existed for many years. Should Slashdot also cover every model refresh from HP, Dell, Lenovo etc? And what about those Microsoft mouse upgrades?

Maybe the story is not about the product but about "the leak".

That seems to be an ever more prevalent marketing gimmick.
Don't spend money on traditional advertising channels. Instead, "leak" the info and let the reporting media do your advertising for you. With "news" channels being ever more just fluff and clickbait, this can get your product in front of consumer eyeballs, and with the smugness of " I know something I am not supposed to".

If they really wanted to make these things more sellable, all they have to do is put USB ports all the way down the side.
If they can put one on there there's no reason they can't put 4 or more on there. If there's not enough space, increase the width of the thing by a centimetre or so to make room. perhaps even add a microdisplay port connector for good measure so I can connect an external monitor directly.

Keyboards are great - my two main machines have Microsoft Ergonomic keyboards, both of which have been used almost daily for 10 years+ and they're both still going great. I even squirreled away a couple more in case they get discontinued.

I find them the most comfortable, and I've been using a variety of keyboards, starting with the likes of the VT52 and teletype ones (I'm not THAT old, but in my native country technology was a number of years behind more developed places).

The keyboards were good too, and the Surface tablets and laptops have been nice, from what I've heard (at least until they broke).

The Go line has always been terrible IMO. They tried to make a budget line but it's just terrible price/performance. Four gigs of RAM and eMMC storage? That was a joke even when the original launched. And now they're announcing a laptop with a LAST GEN processor? The 1135 is decent enough for entry level, but c'mon. I'm surprised the EU hasn't cracked down on the proprietary charger. That thing is an expensive piece of garbage. Thank goodness the Surface supports USB-C PD spec, or I'd be shelling out $90 every year or so for a new charger.

Because laptops come in all shapes and sizes, and USB-C PD might not work for every use case? Are you willing to hold back technology because USB-C PD won't support it?

My mobile workstation [dell.com] works fine with USB-PD. But that's besides the point, because the Microsoft Surface isn't a mobile workstation. It's a fancy tablet.
