Steam Deck Delayed, Valve Apologizes (kotaku.com) 27

Valve has delayed the release of its Steam Deck handheld by several months, it announced in a statement today. The anticipated handheld will now start rolling out in February 2022, pushed back from an initial December release. Kotaku reports: "We're sorry about this -- we did our best to work around the global supply chain issues, but due to material shortages, components aren't reaching our manufacturing facilities in time for us to meet our initial launch dates," Valve wrote. "Based on our updated build estimates, Steam Deck will start shipping to customers February 2022. This will be the new start date of the reservation queue -- all reservation holders keep their place in line but dates will shift back accordingly." several has multiple definitions dependi9ng on where you are from and dictionary used. it can be "more than one" or "more than two". It doesn't have a hard and fast rule.

I guess we throw away "couple" and "few" then.

    • That was a quote from the article... Kotaku likes to clickbait so much stuff these days.

    • It had already been delayed from November to December.

My Steam Deck pre-order got pushed from Q1 2022 to "After Q2 2022", so the production delay is definitely more than just 2 months.

What sucks about this is that AMD will likely be releasing their Zen 4 processors in Q3 2022. That means that the 2020 era Zen 2 based processor in this product will likely be a full 2 generations behind before I even receive it.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Sony or Microsoft announced their own mobile gaming product at 2022 E3.

We've waited this long for it. Take the necessary time to get it right. For me, it's a hard pass on PS5 in favor of this thing, I don't care if it's a bit less powerful, Sony is just too fucked up, Microsoft is worse.

This is almost certainly not about "getting it right", but about "getting it to a distribution point near you". Asia to US supply chain is running two months behind in palces that are doing ok. It's half a year behind in places where it doesn't.

Asia to Europe fares a bit better, but not by much.

      • What you say is entirely true and I have nothing to add other then "getting it right" also include logistics and the original point still stands. We will happily wait while Valve gets it right.

Very true. Try ordering enterprise level Cisco gear. We ordered stuff in April/May that still won't be here until December. Supposedly things are improving though and now the wait time is only 6 months for most new orders.

For a more accurate data point, what was the normal wait time for such an order before the current problems?
