Some Google One Plans Now Come With a Complimentary VPN

An anonymous reader shares a report: If you're a Google One subscriber, there's a new reason to consider the service's $10 per month 2TB plan. Google is adding built-in virtual private network (VPN) functionality to the Google One app, but you'll need to subscribe to the 2TB and above plans to access the perk. While the feature is built into Google One, the company says you can take advantage of it while using any other app on your Android phone to protect your online privacy. Moreover, with the family sharing feature that comes with Google One, five other people can get access to a VPN as well.

It'll get cancelled in a year, so why care?

Well it still provides protection for snooping on the hotell/Airport etc hotspot, and/ or any other networks and pops your data crosees between you and googles vpn endpoint, and third oarties will see your traffic as originating at google do unless they use google analytics the fingerprinting might be a bit harder, it all depends on whos snooping you are concerned about

This way you won't just be served ads base on information collected at "participating" (e.g. sites running Google analytics) endpoints, but rather ALL endpoints that you visit. Google will know very detailed information about every website you visit and every DNS query from every internet-facing application on your device. At that point, Google will likely know more about that device, and the software running on it than the actual owner of that device.

A VPN w/ Google seems like a rather counter-privacy move... I wonder if the Google ELU gives them the rights to everything on your computer as well. Either way, don't care... this is a big NOPE from the onset.

It's really just a service to pay for more storage. Everything else they advertise is to hide the fact that you thought Gmail is free for everyone. They've always had a limit and 15GB is still pretty good.

Why? There are many UNLIMITED VPN services for half a dozen gizmos for half the price.

True - but those other services probably don't support the final downfall of privacy and don't allow us to surrender even more of our control over the online experience. The first rule of using a VPN is to choose a trustworthy company. Google is not only evil, but they are not trustworthy.

I was reviewing mobile plans with Verizon this week when I went to purchase a new phone and noticed that the premium plan for phone warranty/replacement also included VPN. While I thought it was a nice gesture, they potentially would still know who I was and if they had access to the keys, know what my traffic looked like.
