Samsung Galaxy Fold 'Ready' For Launch After Screen Fix (bbc.com) 80

Samsung said it has made the necessary improvements to fix the Galaxy Fold and put it back on sale. The April launch of the device was postponed after early reviewers reported broken screens; it's now scheduled to go on sale in September. From a report: "Samsung has taken the time to fully evaluate the product design, make necessary improvements and run rigorous tests," the company said in a statement. Improvements include extending a protective layer to make it clear it is not meant to be removed, as well as strengthening the hinge area with new protection caps. One explanation for the broken screens appears to have been that some reviewers removed a film which they thought was a typical protective layer that came with the phone when first bought.

i believe it when the reviews are in, showing no more screen failures.
even though that doesn't really mean anything except that the screen will last at least a bit longer, they might still fail after a few weeks/months of use.

  • Wake me up when I can roll up my screen like an ancient scroll. I was told about this by a programmer 30 year ago when I had a 286 or 386 on my desktop. I laughed then and told him he's crazy.
    • It's on their radar [patentlymobile.com]. And I agree with you that an unfurling display is the way to go, not a folding one.
    • Roll your phone up like a scroll? Are you expecting parachute pants to make a comeback, or do you plan to put it in your fanny pack?

      • Hey, don't throw stones. Maybe he wants to roll it up to use to snort coke when he doesn't have a straw handy, or perhaps to smoke weed when he doesn't have a pipe handy. Or maybe he could use it in place of a rolled up newspaper (since he reads all of his news on his phone) when his dog makes a mess on the carpet.

while Samsung makes great hardware, it is the software that is frustrating, why is there several entries for facebook that can not be uninstalled? and is it really disabled when i disable it? and why cant i remove bixby? the galaxy s9+ is my last Samsung phone, when it comes time to buying a new phone i will find one that has a pure & generic bare-bones android using as much FOSS software as possible, there is the lightphone2 at https://www.indiegogo.com/proj... [indiegogo.com] that i really like the concept, but it is only a prototype, i wont give them money for a phone that is not in mass production that i can buy at walmart or a similar retail outlet
i dont use social media like facebook or any other so dont embed it in my phone,

Yeah, forced crapware is super annoying. I haven't been impressed by Samsung software polish myself.
If it helps, you can get an app firewall from F-Droid or possibly on Google Play as well to block the Facebook app and whatever else you want to block (I usually block newly installed apps from accessing the network).

    • You should get a Xiaomi phone and install a third party launcher from the Play Store if you don't like Miui. My phone doesn't have facebook on it and never will. Damn American spyware.

Yep, I went with a oneplus to get around that. I don't buy into all their spiel, but it's good hardware with bloat free android. I won't buy anything Samsung unless I know I can root it to remove the garbage, and that's a lot of work. I factor it into the purchase price. Like buying a fixer upper car...

Samsung Galaxy S5 owner here. Let me tell you your software troubles have only started, which is why I won't buy another Samsung phone. Those "disabled" programs still take-up space. So in 3 years you won't be able to upgrade to the latest OS patch because the disabled programs are taking up too much space. Then one of those "disabled" programs are found to have a security problem. You can't patch it unless you enable it, and if you disable it then the original version is downloaded again.

My last monitor came with a big yellow tag warning people not to remove the plastic sheet on the monitor screen.

It was obvious to me that it was part of the monitor but apparently it wasn't clear to some people, hence the tag.

So I wonder how many people it took tearing the front of the screen off to make them add that warning tag, and the answer is, "probably a lot".

  • Its probably too late. When this came out they had a huge marketing push behind it, thanks to which the problems will be remembered for years. Even if this new version works perfectly (which, being new, it probably won't), everyone's going to associate it with the failures of the review units.

  • I've been waiting for this long. I will grab it right away.
