An anonymous reader shares an article: The list of Chromebooks that can officially run Android apps has been a bit limited, but that's changing. They include: Acer Chromebook 11 N7 (C731, C731T), Acer Chromebook 15 (CB3-532), Asus Chromebook C202SA, ASUS Chromebook C300SA/C301SA, CTL NL61 Chromebook, Dell Chromebook 11 (3180), Dell Chromebook 11 Convertible (3189), Dell Chromebook 13 (3380), HP Chromebook 11 G5 EE, HP Chromebook 13 G1, Lenovo Flex 11 Chromebook, Lenovo N23 Yoga Chromebook, Lenovo N22 Chromebook, Lenovo N23 Chromebook, Samsung Chromebook 3, and Mercer Chromebook NL6D.

  • Forget Windows S, if they were to follow through and do this right, they could obliterate the entire retail Windows market. Of course, this is Google, so they won't follow through and they won't do it right. Seriously though, it's nice to see cheap solid state machines with proper keyboards that can run a good range of applications. Raspberry Pi? What's that?

The problem is, Google has decided on a 2-year/5-year style of support - 2 years of feature upgrades, 5 years of total support, then your chromebook is no longer supported. This means if you have one of the early Chromebooks, like the original Chromebook Pixel, you won't get this (even though it's more than capable of running those apps).

At least Microsoft supports their software for crazy long periods of time - Windows 7 just fell out of feature support, but will get security updates until 2021 or so.

      • Quite right, and one of about five reasons I'm probably replacing my Note 4 with an Iphone 8. To be fair though you can download a reinstall of the OS for any given chromebook from google in the event of a virus. Yes, I've seen it happen. No, it wasn't a browser addon.
  • That little beast had 32GB flash storage AND a touch screen....you know, like a device that runs Android....ugh.

I'd rather just believe that it's done by little elves running around.

Working...
