A Wi-Fi Wardriving Motorbike — With Plans Available 36

mask.of.sanity writes "This custom Yamaha TRX 850 has been outfitted with wireless sniffing and attack tools, routers, a laptop, Raspberry Pi and even a heads up display integrated within the bike helmet. It was built from open source kit and cheap hardware by a security penetration tester who wanted to make his love of wardriving more nimble. The plans are detailed in a diagram and a video."

Ah, wardriving. It's like 2001 all over again. I remember that long, hot summer. The smell of chalk on concrete, the taste of poorly secured WEP.

    • I wonder how much wardriving it took to discover the nearest McDonald's or Starbucks where WiFi is available for free.

Only one thing I see right off that is 'just wrong.' It looks like a stock sony vaio, I would not recommend operating any machine with a hard drive from a bicycle mount personally. A decent netbook with an SSD is going to be far less prone to catastrophic failure from normal use in this application.

The cell phone in they guy's pocket probably does a better job as a war driving tool.

Park a motor bike outside my house and get on a keyboard and see how long it takes for me and/or the cops to be looking over your sholder.

  • Sounds like someone has been watching the Matrix or something a little too much.

Herds of nerds driving geared up motorcycles so they can go around war driving. Very cyberpunk, kinda. Now he just needs a couple of swords.

And, it sounds like he's trying to do a little more 'black hat' kind of stuff, but at least he can make a fast getaway.

Of course, I can picture the pick up lines ... "Hey baby, like my custom motorcycle" .... "oooh, you're such a stud" ... "yeah, and it's equipped with custom wi-fi penetra

You know, I can think of another customized bike ridden by a nerd, and all the adventures he got in trying to recover it after it was stolen. But I don't think Paul Reubens was in the Matrix... Or at least I hope he wasn't... Great, now I have a mental image of Paul Reubens dressed in black leather yelling "Tank! I need an exit! Or my bike!".
  • Motorbikes are quick and agile, and just the thing for nipping through town with your messenger bag and Motorola GP300. If you're wardriving, that's going to suck, because you're going to go out of range of a lot of APs before you even scan round for them.

What you want to fit as a covert wardriving rig is a mini road sweeper.

"Plumbing" van. No one looks twice if you're parked for hours - tons of space for gear in a concealed space in the back.

      • That's not much good for wardriving. you want something that can quite reasonably drive up and down the streets, covering every single one, really slowly.

Outfit as one of the 'power line inspection' vans. You can drive nice and slow everywhere and potentially stop for hours at a time. Just get out and look up every hour or two, pad in hand, making notes.

"I wanted to combine two things that I really love: Building and riding motorcycles and trashing wireless networks," Andzakovic told delegates at Kiwicon 6.

Guy sounds like a douche if you ask me.

  • Why wardrive in 2012? Considering you've got:

    A) Cell phones with 4G (LTE) coverage available in nearly every major area, if not 4G than 3G is pretty common in any reasonably populated area.

    B) Everyone and their uncle has free wi-fi at their coffee shop/restaurant/hotel, etc.

Seriously, if you need to get your w@r3z t0rr3ntz why not just load up uTorrent on your Android Phone/tablet/toaster and go down to the local coffee shop and download it?

  • Years ago, there was a story [comminit.com] where they used motorbikes with wifi to connect villages to each other and the nearest city. This was in Cambodia before cheap mobile phones, they had a Fidonet-ish setup where outgoing email would be uploaded to the motorbike and stored there for delivery to the next village or to an Internet-connected computer in the city. The company that set this up [firstmilesolutions.com].

Fast, cheap, good: pick two.
