San Francisco Asks for Wifi Proposals 3

jacksonwest writes "The City of San Francisco have released their request for proposals (RFP) for Wireless TechConnect, the citywide wifi initiative. They want premium services up to a minimum of 3mbps symmetric, with 1mbps the minimum for users roaming up 30 miles an hour or faster. While there's a nod to network neutrality, and the security specifications are thorough, there are very few requirements regarding privacy. The actual proposals won't be made public until the vendor is chosen, and even then will be redacted."

  • Why stop there? They should expand the wireless network to cover the entire state of CA in case of a major earthquake. Or at least make it totally free under an emergency. Provided you have a laptop and power, some IM and news forcast can go a long way.

    • As nice as that would be I hardly think that San Francisco should be responsible for the whole states WiFi access. I would love to see this sort of thing really take off but I have some reservations with the government getting too involved with my access to "free" information. As in beer, as in speech, and what was the other one?

To the systems programmer, users and applications serve only to provide a test load.
