I must say, I am way more impressed by this than pretty much any other case mod I can think of....it is both cool looking and functional....and I think even non-geeks would find it nifty.

Whilst this mod is indeed impressive looking, tt would have been better if it wasn't the actual desk.
It somewhat ruins the effect having a bit slab of glass in the way.

My initial thought upon reading the summary was that he built it sideways- thus using one of the "wings" as the desktop.

But I must admit it does look pretty good. And far more usability than other case mods I've seen.

I'd hate to be the pilot of that TIE fighter, especially when the person using the computer is looking at pr0n.

I think 23 hours a day of it is a bit too much for that pilot to see.

A Tie Defender [starwars.com] would be even cooler. One of the solar panels could be horizontal as your desk, and the other two would be legs.

The game runs fine under WinXP, by the way. I still play it on occasion. I remember there also was a rewrite with better graphics released at some point, although not sure what it was called.

The remake was released after Xwing vs. TIE Fighter. It uses the engine from that game and also has updated cutscenes but as far as I can tell all of the voice acting is the same as the original. Further more the package included remakes of both the X-wing and TIE fighter games along with all of the expansion packs.

Yup, the collector's edition. I've got it. I believe all it did for the graphical end of things was just up the resolution to something like 640*480 (please correct me if I'm wrong).

I've got a big monitor, so it doesn't look too good there - I'm talking about a full-blown remake, new engine, new models, sounds, the works, but with the same missions and the same gameplay.

Actually this was a full-blown remake. It has the models from X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, and uses Direct3d. Try playing the old original DOS versions. They were in 320x240 and the models were very simple compared to the what is found in the remakes.

You have to remember just when these games were released. XvsTIE came out in 1997 so you can't really expect it to look as good as modern games. And the sequal game to the X-Wing and TIE series X-Wing Alliance was released in 1999. There is currently a proje

You are correct, sir. Update the graphics and lead the gameplay alone (just add more ships and up the AI). Oh, and include all of the expansion packs, and bring back the X-Wing capability where you could build up other pilots and then use them as your wingmen...

I would drop 200 bucks for that game.

Nope, I just remember how much I played that game, and whenever it is mentioned I miss it. Just an awesome game, took a LONG time to beat, you could re-play it 5000 different ways, etc. For an updated version of that with modern graphics (really, it's just the resolution and textures), I would throw down decent cash - many, many hours of fun would be had for me, so I find it worth it. Hell, I basically bought an XBox just for Halo.

Absolutely; I still have that game - albeit on the shelf - and played the hell out of it. Most fun I've had with a game - ever.

They should absolutely release an updated version with the same single player gameplay of the original. Adding multiplayer would be sweet - in this day and age pretty much a must - but they should not sacrificed single player

onboard everything? In the first pic, you can clearly see the PCI expansion slots to the right of the cockpit window. By the placement of the motherboard, expansion ports would be going upward into the glass. So is he using onboard video, audio, and networking?

The 54 icons is due the unusable MS menu system which makes your seldom used, but very important programs disappear. The one place where you can keep an eye on your icons and ensure that they don't disappear on you, is on the desktop...

Go into the Start Menu and Taskbar settings, and turn off "Personalized Menus". Then you don't have to deal with Windows deciding how your start menu should look (which has to be one of the dumbest things Microsoft has ever come up with in terms of UI).

I put all my usual icons in the Quicklaunch bar along with my Network Control Panel. (Please oh please, Microsoft, bless us with Network Profiles like Mac OS has...) That quicklaunch bar is one of the most useful features (and I always disable the Desktop Cleanup Wizard so that when I re-ghost my system after 60 days it doesn't whine and bitch at me.) I hope somebody comes up with a launcher like Quicksilver or Launchbar for Windows really really soon.

I've got my whole thing planned out. I'm going to add random lights on the case, make it transparent AND ugly (that's a must), and stick "sponsorship" decals on it. I'm also going to find as many Intel Pentium 4 stickers as I can so it goes faster! I'm going to win for sure.

Seriously though, case modding is really fun for people who don't have the money to add performance to their PC. In fact, you can find various things around the house to make your case Martha Stewart friendly!

TIE Fighters are only flimzy IF you get hit. I still remember jumping online the day X-Wing Alliance came out, sadly it never had the community of the MSN Gaming Zone's X-Wing vs. TIE, but I schooled some kids that needed their pansy shields in their X-Wing and A-Wing.
