Yopy Running Game Boy And Heretic 93

Usquebaugh sent us a fairly impressive image -- this site shows several screenshots of the Yopy (the Samsung Linux-based PDA that we've covered a bit in the past). It's pretty similiar to most color handhelds, although the screenshots show it running Heretic and a Game Boy emulator.

320x240, 16bpp color. Same as the iPaq, except Compaq went cheap (or had to due to supply) and used a 12bpp display. Cpt_Kirks

Can one even buy a Yopy in the US today. I've been waiting since who knows when and it would be a lot easier to go buy a palm at this rate (already bought two since February). The old Fan page Yopy fan page [yopy.org] is gone and now the useless official page [yopy.com] gives next to no info. Any info from anyone out there ?

I'm waiting for the new color Palm by Handspring optimized for gaming. The annoucenment is Monday. Availability immediately. *This* is the shit. Espicially with the cellphone cartridge.

I am working on some game ports to the iPaq now. I have compiled Doom on the skiffcluster. It looks like it will install. Xmame should work with minimal changes too. I am doing the research on porting Quake. The iPaq has the horsepower to run Quake, but memory could be a problem. My 64MB CF card is on the way... Now we need some "meeting games". Anybody know of good poker, empire and mahjong x games that would work on a little screen? I have my serial cable now and am going to install Linux when v0.16 gets stable. Cpt_Kirks
  • And unfortunately a 2cent control pad which means you can only see one key down at a time. Hey, but who needs games....

    Well, I do. :)
  • Try pressing the center button of the pad at the
same time as going in a direction!
  • Heh, maybe they just sent out my version to the people posting on those "non-Compaq message boards." FWIW, mine was dated September 20 — what date do you have on the letter you saw?

    Cheers,

  • If you did Microsoft might sue.

Such hacks are a matter of reverse engenearing the hardware and publishing the results and hacking the accual software.
With Windows you'd have the additional step of reverse engenearing Windows and publishing the results.

It could be done but it may result in legal papers from Microsoft...
The makers of the Yopy might phone you and ask "Why?" but thats about all...
  • Windows NT and CE also run on nonIntel hardware. Only 9x is bond to Intel hardware.

I understand the confusion.. Microsoft is using the Windows name to confuse people. NT and CE are not even remotely related to 9X. Thies are three diffrent operating systems sharing a look and feel interface.

To ferther the confusion Microsoft has damaged NT quite a bit...
While OS/2 was designed to run on nonIntel hardware IBM never took advantage of this sence OS/2 was not yet ready to do any heavy lifting hardware than running the office LAN (50 to 1,000 users vs Internet with a potetal of tens of thousands)
Microsoft tried to sell Windows NT for nonIntel machines but found people tech savy enough to use Risc servers are tech savy enough to stay away from Microsoft Windows (95,3.11). It made sence.. NT isn't Windows 95/3.11 it can do some heavy lifting but 95/3.11 for heavy work would be a joke. 95 for games becouse it's easy to lock up and nock out the rest of the operating system.. they do it and take over the system.. basicly reducing Windows 95 to that of a video game console.. with all the advatages of a PC keyboard, mouse and joystick.

Anyway... so Microsoft gave up on it and went the Intel optomisation route for NT.
When Alpha wanted to run NT it had to emulate the x86 to a degree becouse so many NT apps were not portable.
The Intel optomising made sence from Microsofts side.. However had Microsoft tryed to play that "NT is Windows" stunt techs wouldn't think "NT on Risc is a joke" when it wasn't.
They accadentally FUDed themselfs pritty badly... "If you don't know what you need NT for then you probably don't need NT at all" wops.. Great.. sence nobody knew what to do with NT at that time.. wonderful marketting...

Anyway yeah Microsoft can run NT and CE on non-x86 hardware but they didn't think that naming everything Windows users might give users the false impression that NT has all the defects of Windows... Being bond to X86 hardware being just one of many issues
  • Yet annother user who dosn't know the diffrence between Windows and those other operating systems shipped under the name.
  • This looks like it would be a pain to play.
The way the game pad is set up I imagin it would be a pain to accually play this thing.
Ok neat that it can be done... But I just can't see me using it to play games
  • I think you may have missed the point...
    But by very very little..

The games are unplayable on this thing.. so it seems.. Just a hack to see "Look.. see"
This thing is to expensive to be a gameboy clone anyway... But if you get a PDA then you can save a little by using this instead of a gameboy
(think.. 1,000 remote controlls... thats what your looking at with PDAs and portable game boxes really soon... this PDA for one thing.. this PDA for that.. etc etc etc)

As for color.. busness graphs etc and other details also easyer on the eyes when it's color. The trade off isn't cost but battery life.
Also it's nice to have photos of your kid in your PDA instead of your wallet.. update them more often.. that sort of thing..
Nude pictues of your GF also.. not so easy to get to when they are on your PDA instead of your wallet.
Anyway.. a color screen is useful for looking at data or images I wouldn't go so far as porting games to the thing...
But.. if you allready have a PDA.. then why buy a pocket game box?
It's not a replacement to your computer of course but it is a replacement to the 1,001 little busness gadgets made in the late 1980s early 1990s... GameBoy being only one exaple... not however the most importent one...
  • If you are a mirror site perhaps you could reverse the image to? tnx in advance.

  • Dude. The guy was obviously using the built-in camera, and set up the gizmo in front of a mirror to take pictures of itself. Even cooler, eh?

  • It seems as though I've been reading about this (and Compaq's IPAQ handheld) for about a year or so and still can't find either. I know Compaq's problem was forecasting, but what about YOPI? I think this market would explode if a PDA running Linix would become available. Are there threats against companies not supporting Pocket PC or Palm??
  • Hmmm, the logo shows right though - that's something else ...
  • Ug, please don't speak the language of annoying ex-girlfriends :/
  • Ahh, but the logo is printed sideways so it just goes upside down.

Mirrors only flip sides not top/bottom, otherwise you'd be looking at your feet when you look in the miiror.

    ;-)
  • If I couldn't get away with playing games on my TI-82, I seriously doubt this is gonna fly.
  • No, I noticed it too... and I don't know what to think either... :/
    --
  • The logo is printed sideways, yes but it still doesn't work like you say...
The thing is that I really prefer to read from left to right.
If you don't understand what I mean you should find a small mirror, hold it in front of your monitor... and look into the mirror from behind the monitor.
Then the Heretic game will look all right... but I wouldn't say that the logo says Yopy anymore...
    Am I wrong?

  • Does it really matter? The in the time it takes to add an apostraphe and an "e" I could be doing a lot more constructive things. Yes, I do know the difference, but does it really matter? I think not
  • Well, the time that it took to right it is now irrelevant. Its the point that matters.
  • Dood! Your a geek, there is nothing wrong with that. I dont find it sad to buy a PDA just to play doom. A lot of geeks do stupid things like that, its what makes us geeks! Hey, I've got tetris + pong to play with on my graphics calculator. It doesn't matter how, but all geeks must have an electronics device of some sort with them at all times. Now that should be a prerequisite to even get a slashdot account, let alone call yourself a geek.
  • It looks like the X Server is just screwed up - maybe Wine is causing the reversed video. At first, I thought it was the Korean Heretic, but the unit is facing the right way.
  • Sigh....these pictures just make we weepy. I want to play HERETIC now!

Anyone else? Man, one of my favourite PC games.

  • Hey Taco, I think that the Yopy needs its own topic icon. It surpassed the PalmPilot in coolness long ago.

  • I also attended that meeting. Right now the iPaq is a little bit out of my price range but its a very interesting device. Hopefully the Yopy gets released and the prices start to go down a little.

The Yopy looks like it has a lot more applications than the iPaq does but I imagine they could also run on the iPaq since they both use a StrongARM Processor.

  • how big is the screen, could you even be able to read that xterm? What about playing a game boy in a 1/8 of the screen, could you see that?

I think this is very cool, but just wondering how much toll it would take on the eyes.

And how do you type into the xterm?

It is bad ass though, I want one :)

  • The big question for me is just when and where can I buy a yopi? I live in Austria, where such "gadgets" usually are released long after they are avalilable anywhere else. But I would even be willing to travel to New York to buy one (What better excuse is there for a trip to NYC?)
  • And why the hell did you consider it redundant?! Idiot.

    --
  • These guys are missing the whole point of PDAs. If you want to play games, buy a damn Game Boy. PDAs weren't invented to be a replacement for your computer. Adding color is pointless, all they need are basic functions like schedules and address books. Yes, and computers were only for scientists to do a lot of number crunching for complicated mathematical equasions. PDA's ARE computers. They just are smaller and suck less juice.
  • I agree... this is weird... the GUI is backward, making the theory that they used the onboard camera to take a picture of itself in a mirror substantiate, but the YOPY text IS correct... meaning that on the unit itself, the YOPY text would have to have been written in a mirrored fashion... can you say conspiracy?

  • I do know the difference between 95, CE and NT. In fact, my machine at home runs 95, NT Workstation, and SuSE linux. Also, I did take some classes for NT and such, and I've been a systems administrator for NT, various unices, and a few mainframes that run their own OS's. So, the point is, I was being sarcastic. Laugh at my joke and move on. Personally I don't like getting blue screens whether it is the "System is busy. Press Crtl Alt Del" type dialog of 95, or the authentic BSOD from NT with the hex crap all over the screen. I've seen CE and tried it out, and I don't like it. Desktop operating systems (more specifically a gui, which M$ ties in to their OS too much) are not meant for handhelds in my opinion, although it could work with linux if you have a small enough distro and don't have to run X. It sounds like that is what is going on here but I don't know enough about this device...oh...back to the parody part. The point is that I was making fun of all the people that hack their devices to run linux. It's a cool idea but sometimes a bit silly.

I feel like I just explained a joke to the paranoid android. What was his name? Marvin?

  • In the time it took you to write that, you could have written a lot of apostraphe's.

  • And I suppose you don't play games on your PC? After all, PC's weren't designed to play games. At least not at first, but they are now. What is so difficult for some people to accept evolution? Who is to say that in a few years PDA like devices might not be all we have? Personally, I would love to have all the power of a modern PC in something that I could bring anywhere. Come home, plug in a keyboard and a moniter, you have your PC. On the road, your PDA has all the versatility of what we now consider state of the art computing. Need something a little more practical on the road? Plug your PDA into a docking station in the back of your laptop frame, you have a keyboard and moniter, everything still running from the PDA. Battery, processor, hard drive etc right there. And 5 gig flash memory cards replace CD's and floppys. Hell, they can even replace hard drives. Who knows what the not-too-distant future will bring. But I do believe it is forward thinking and creative people like those who port linux or games to PDA's and digital cams that will inspire the next great leap in computer evolution. Or mabey even bring it to us.

  • At least X wasn't named "W++".

Playing heretic on that thing must be awful. 6 buttons on the left, and 0 on the right. I dont get it, do you play with one hand?

...and i remember when my 486 could barely play heretic...
  • Look at the graphics featured in the previous yopy article here: http://www.gmate.co.kr/english/beta.tgz, and compare them to the graphics from this site:

You'll notice that EVERYTHING is mirrored perfectly. Looking at these graphics, I'd say that Heretic is being displayed backwards due to some development weirdness, rather than any kind any kind of foul play - most likely, the pictures where modified so that heretic would be displayed properly for all of us readers.

I'd be willing to bet that the guy who posted these caps actually plays in front of the mirror.

  • A 1GB drive that fits into a PDA certainly costs, at this point in time. I don't want to mortgage my house to buy a PDA that could easily walk off on me...

Palm Computing has nearly "disposable" hardware; at least, I won't be crushed if a $150 M100 gets crushed...

  • This is the first time I have looked at a screenshot of the Yopy, and noticed the interface looks oddly like CE 2.1 on Palm-sized PC. Any particular reason they couldn't make their own interface? Honestly, the first time I saw RedHat long ago defaulting to that Windows ripoff, I couldn't understand why. And now this.

Now if I could get a Game Boy emulator running on my iPaq, I'll be held over until the game expansion for it.
  • The Game Boy emulator for CE shouldn't be a problem to port to the iPaq, but the gameplay for things like it and MAME-CE are very limited due to a serious flaw in the hardware (which will bite you no matter what OS you're running on the iPaq): The iPaq doesn't allow the joypad and any of the buttons to be pressed simultaneously, meaning that you can forget moving and jumping/firing at the same time. Pretty big limitation of you plan to use the GB emulator or MAME-CE, which works otherwise. Hopefully iPaq will get this right on their next models. FWIW, the Cassiopeias don't have this problem

    Cheers,

  • Doesn't seem like Compaq really cares about the issue. Here's the response that Compaq has been mailing some of their customers today:

There have been a lot of calls and e-mails to Compaq, as well as posts on non-Compaq message boards concerning the iPAQ H3600 PocketPC and the ability of the unit to recognize more than one application button being pressed at a time.

The official answer on this is:

    1. This is not a design flaw. The iPAQ Pocket PC was not designed to operate in this manner and it is not feasible to alter the design to enable this capability.

    2. Please understand that each Pocket PC hardware manufacturer designs hardware differently.

    3. Please also understand that because of this, software designers writing applications for the Pocket PC OS have an obligation to test software with each OEM's Pocket PC device that they claim to support before it is offered for sale.

    Thank You,
    Compaq eServices

Seems kind of odd that they would mention that there was discussion about this issue on "non-Compaq message boards," as if all those posts are somehow illegitimate and not worthy of consideration. Oh well...

    Cheers,

  • What is the resolution of that screen, 640x480? It just seems that there is just too much detail for a handheld.

Of course, if it is legitimate I can add wireless networking and use it as a remote X display. Heaven (or a mediocre simulation thereof) is at hand?

For the poster that busted my little bubble of sureality yesterday, please, please, please let me wallow in my self-delusion that a simple, wireless, remote, handheld X-display could be profitable.

  • What's the resolution on the Yopy?
  • I thought that little camera on its side was pointing at a decent flatscreen monitor that's connected to a computer actaully running heretic. Or its probably just an honest mistake, like that Jimi Hendrix compilation album where the cover photo shows him playing right-handed.

  • Is that circular thing on the end a digital camera? If it is then it would seem that it is sitting in front of a mirror taking a photo of itself.

Anyone know the price this thing is aming for?
  • Oddly, Compaq has also sent out letters saying that this problem *is* fixable, that they are working on it, and will publish the fix as soon as they can.

    -Vercingetorix
  • An alternative is of course to open one of those images in your favourite image manipulation (eg The Gimp) program and to then flip it... (may feel easier than the mirror stuff)... It won't look right at all.

Another thing is that the Yopy actually has those 2 round buttons on the RIGHT side on all images I've seen of it!

  • The iPaq is way to pricey for me too. Check out the Helio [myhelio.com], which goes for $150, and runs Linux. A much more accessible device for a Linux PDA than the iPaq. And yes, it's actually shipping.
  • What is this W Windows of which they speak?
  • One of these days I am going to need to buy a PDA for the express purpose of playing Doom. Then my life will be complete! As you might imagine, I have a very sad life.
  • Or once you join the rest of us in the real world during those times that your boss is going on and on and on and since all s/he can think a handheld is good for is taking notes they will think you are listening. Now what I really want to see is screenshots of "the one true game" yes of course that would be Nethack!!!!!!
  • I made a mirror over at http://www.johncglass.com/mirror/yopi.htm [johncglass.com]

    Enjoy!

  • Check out DOOM for the Digital Camera [mame.net], something that was on Slashdot a while ago. Pretty cool, considering the camera has better controls on it. This means you can download and play HOOVER.WAD on your trip to the Hoover Dam. "Who's that guy with the shotgun? I think that was the state trooper. Can be a misnomer.

An AS/400 system uses the PowerPC processor, as do recent MVS systems, but this does not mean you can run MacOS software on them.

These machines are likely to become quite interesting when you can put something like 64MB-128MB of storage on them, but it is not obvious that software that runs on the iPaq will necessarily run on the Yopy merely because both computers have the same CPU.

For instance, if the iPaq is doing graphics via X, and the Yopy is running something like the "embedded Qt" or "FLTK lite, sans X," the programs that will work on both will merely be the daemons, and not anything graphical.

Frankly, the fact that WinCE has been a "bloated" platform (certainly compared to PalmOS) is a WONDERFUL thing; that encourages having vast quantities of RAM/other storage, which is very nice if you want to put some semblance of a fullscale Unix onto it...

I have an iPAQ running linux now. while useability as a pda is still very lacking. It has got to be one of the coolest things ever. I have had quake running over the network and exported to the ipaqs display, really impressed the other geeks here at work. As far as them shipping that is a little bit of a strech. If you shop around you may find one but almost nobody has them in stock. This is obviously due to the coolness of the product and the lack of good prodution runs.

If you have the $500 for a pda though I would definatly go for it.

Real W, but to a different project

Which is good, because the W Window System that the Yopy [yopy.org] runs is not the predecessor to X. It's an entirely new project.

So while interesting, the history lesson has nothing to do with the Yopy. (Just figured I'd try to stamp out that meme before it germinated too much).

I just got back from the Boston/MIT LUG meeting. http://www.blu.org/ They had Jim Gettys talk about linux on the iPaq.

Unlike the Yopy, the iPaq is actually shipping.

Unlike the Yopy, the iPaq has open development with rapid release. They are using the 2.4pre kernels, and might be fully supported in the main kernel tree when 2.4 is out.

The interface is open, and supports USB, serial, compact flash adapter ($40), and PC card (PCMCIA) adapter ($140). The PC card adapter has a battery that doubles the life (and the size almost) of the beast. This allows use of the 1 GB IBM CF microdrive, 2 GB PC card HD, wireless 10 Mbit PC cars, ethernet pc cards, etc.

USB will eventually be used for wired network, but no keyboard/mouse support.

They recently figured out how to restore CE, so you can go back and forth between win/lin.

The Helix guys here are working on porting parts of GNOME. Usability has a ways to go, but it looks sweet.

Check www.handhelds.org. You can use a guest account and log into one of the machine and do development. (Java and other things are already running)

I was amazed at how quickly development is coming along.

    Only $500 bucks....

And he's not kidding. It really was the predecessor [cs.tut.fi] to the X Windows System [catalog.com]. At least X wasn't named "W++". "W" was originally a black and white 1-bit display, although color was added later [students.tut.fi]. Looks like the Yopy has color. There's also the Vinyl Window System [webspawner.com], but it's not available for the Yopy.

Well, since it's common for people to want to hack their devices that run other OS's to run linux, can we run windows on this thing? I sometimes get the GSOD on my palm pilot, I'm really looking forward to being able to expand to a BSOD on another piece of equipment. It would enable me to complain about microsoft anywhere that I can't take my laptop to. I can be on a hike in the middle of the mountains, and be able to yell, "GOD DAMN YOU MICROSOFT!!!" when I get a blue screen on my pda and get to hear the echos going throughout the valleys.

On a side note, slashdot and Ron Bacardi do not mix very well.
