Yeap they are paied up. I get 25Gb of bandwidth a month (lets hope it will hold with slashdot)

I also posted straight to the Mov because I don't think the slashdot people would want to see the blog or entry but if you are intersted the blog entry is at this link [mikeoconnor.net] any my site is here [mikeoconnor.net]

Dude... The movie is almost 8MB. It only takes a little more than 3000 downloads to reach your 25 GB (an eighth of that if it's in gigabits). Or 3307.5 downloads to be exact. That's NOT much for slashdot...
        • I know but when I originaly made the post they had only used a few MB, and that was at about 8:45am (an hour and 15 after the original post) it took some time before the people started to go (a long time) I guess I have proof that /. people don't read the articals, if it takes over an hour and a half for the traffic to come flying in.
        • The other good news is, if I need to I can always by more bandwidth from my hosting company ehostpros They have got good prices. (hay for $6 more a month I can get an extra 500Mb of space and 10Gb of bandwidth)

Can we have some adjectives? Please? I understand they're doing 'stuff', and I imagine it has to do with robots, but what?

And what's a cowork? Is this some sort of Tolkien/Gary Larson crossover?

OOoooo, stuff. I love stuff. Especially cool stuff. I can't wait to RTFA about cool stuff. Stuff they are working on. Then share it with my coworks. That will be cool.
    • Adjectives? What, aren't 'new' and 'cool' good enough for you?

As to 'coworks', that happens to be an amalgamation of 'coworker' and 'cohort', thank you very much, Mr. Pedant. It's a perfectly valid and reasonable word!

Some people are never happy with anything ...

      • What, aren't 'new' and 'cool' good enough for you?

Enough to have me salivating with consumerist delight. After all, who wants 'old' and 'warm'?

But seriously, that story wasn't really much better than "OMG K3wL! Ch3ck 0ut $tu44", at least in terms of actually informing me about anything. Anything at all.

Sorry, I'll get back in my box now.

  • So if I'm not mistaken, CMU was showing off the stuff they were doing by showing off the new stuff they were working on in a video that shows the cool stuff they are doing.

i am no longer surprised that it has not been slashdotted. Dullest video about robots ever?
  • I have to admit I expected something more... A lot of the "stuff" strikes me as fun physics experiments and excercises in robotics. Not that I am an expert or anything, but it seemed to me like there was a shortage of novelty in the video. More "smaller and better" than "innovative". Still, some fun geek stuff.

I also completely missed what the head on the screen was. Some sort of virtual prototype?

  • Where were the freakin laser beams?

Where were the robots living on the reservation eating tyres like licorice?

Where was even a large metallic being screaming "Danger Danger Will Robinson" when trying to protect Will from a pederast doctor.

Robots these days, I don't know...

  • If it weren't for having seen half the stuff on slashdot before, I wouldn't have any idea what the heck any of that stuff was supposed to be about. Much of it has been covered in better detail before here on slashdot, and the interesting bits about each project were entirely ignored. There's even a video of that first robot swimming somewhere. Actually, google for "CMU robot swimming" returns this slashdot story [slashdot.org] if you're interested.

Been at RI for over a year now. I highly urge anyone interested in the video to apply. You can _easily_ be working on any of those projects if you just apply yourself.

The video only showed a small fraction of what is to be found at RI.

for my essay, I researched a few programs, and wrote about those that interested me. I stressed those which will have a big impact on society and have a great application in transfer of tech from academia to industry, like security & health care.

I did work in graduate classes at my undergrad, NYU, related to computer vision & AI, which was positive.

        • Thanks for the response. I'm applying to the CALD Ph.D. program and I have some research projects and decent grades and test scores so hopefully it'll go well.

  • They built a robot that plays the bagpipes? CMU has the robot thing down, but maybe they should think about adding a robot ethics course.
