Dell Is All In On Generative AI (theverge.com) 18

It isn't just software companies looking to enter the generative AI fray. Dell, the PC maker, is going all in on generative AI and offering hardware to run powerful models and a new platform to help organizations get started. From a report:The company released what it calls Dell Generative AI Solutions for clients to set up access to large language models and create generative AI projects. The company will offer new hardware setups, a managed service platform, and computers to run generative AI projects faster.

Dell is known for releasing laptops and monitors, but the company also produces server racks and other enterprise hardware. While the more public face of the AI arms race is between developers of large language models like Meta, OpenAI, and Google, another group of tech companies is looking into how to cash in on the technology. From hardware providers to cloud providers, everyone believes they need an AI service to keep up as clients want to add more AI capabilities to their businesses.

They're selling shovels in a gold rush. That's not a bad strategy.

    • I'm thinking that all the cloud server companies are going to jump on this. AWS, Azure, Oracle, etc eventually will offer you your own personal generative AI engine-as-a-service.

The shovel supply chain of Dell > Nvidia > Fabs > ASML > Their suppliers is a long one. They will keep rolling in it long after the the next tech fad comes along and needs their supply chain.

Separating idiots from their money always was a winning strategy.

Is there any useful information about this? What is it exactly Dell is seeking to do other than selling computers with NVIDIA GPUs?

I suspect we'll soon see CPU inference become more viable as next gen server and client processors get native inference acceleration. There is still a huge reduction in memory bandwidth yet with a few channels of DDR5 should be enough to be useful without spending a fortune on GPUs with lots of VRAM.

  • I suspect this is all about having a private AI. My employer has made it very clear that we are never to use Chat GPT if it involves sharing private data. We don't have a non-disclosure agreement, so anything we type into Chat GPT is just like sharing it with someone outside the company. Having tools like that which are internal allows a company to tell their employees to use it for everything that makes sense.

Disclaimer: My employer happens to be Dell, but I know nothing about this announcement, as I wo

  • Anyone with a sliver of computer knowledge knows that ChatGPT doesn't even slightly resemble an AI. It has zero understanding of what it's doing, or what is true, false, or questionable. It's a fancier version of the Eliza program someone came up with in the 1960s.

The marketing guys have sure had a wild success in creating a tulip craze, here, but there's nothing behind the curtain besides an old flimflam man. This is a fantastically big ol' bubble that's going to pop and leave gum all over the place.

True as that may well be, ChatGPT and friends don't need to be "real AI" to still be disruptive.
