Apple Readies Its Next Range of Macs (bloomberg.com) 29
According to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is readying a new batch of Macs to launch "between late spring and summer." This includes a 15-inch MacBook Air and a new 24-inch iMac. From the report: Apple's next iMac desktop is at an advanced stage of development called engineering validation testing, or EVT, and the company is conducting production tests of the machine. The next iMac will continue to come in the same 24-inch screen size as the current model, which was announced in April 2021. The versions being tested also come in the same colors as the current iMac, a palette that includes blue, silver, pink and orange.
The new iMacs will, of course, be more powerful -- with a new M-series chip to replace the M1. There also will be some behind-the-scenes changes. The computer will see some of its internal components relocated and redesigned, and the manufacturing process for attaching the iMac's stand is different. While development of the new iMacs -- codenamed J433 and J434 -- has reached a late stage, it's not expected to go into mass production for at least three months. That means it won't ship until the second half of the year at the earliest. Still, this is a great development for anyone disappointed that Apple's all-in-one desktop hasn't been updated in nearly two years.

I don't have any idea what will be in it, I don't care about product rumors at all so I don't pay attention to them - I am just really curious how they square the inherent upgradability factor of the Mac Pro with the system design of the M1.
I just think whatever results will be really interesting, though honestly for my needs the Macbook Pros are plenty powerful now, even doing some video editing.

These seem like more evolutions of the design.
For what it is worth, I miss the days of Apple trying out more exploratory designs like the iMac G4 "iLamp" or "Cube", hell I loved the aesthetic of the iMac G3 M5521 colorful boxes.
The first problem is that things like the Cube don't sell well enough. The second problem is that Apple is all too happy to just cruise along with the same case designs they've had for years. It's cheaper for them, and if they know that the fans will buy them anyway, there's no real incentive to stretch the boundaries. Besides, the last time that they did, the Mac Pro ended up looking like a dehumidifier for your desk.

I am stuck either buying a 2018/19 imac 27" OR a mini and get 2 other-brand monitors so I don't bankrupt myself. No way I'm buying a 24" imac

Just buy a Mac Mini and a 27" monitor.
You will save money and have better upgrade options.

iMacs are bad, because they are wasteful. The display is still useful when the machine has been abandoned. Back in the CRT era this wasn't true, but for all LCD iMacs it has been. Let Apple just make a display designed to hold a Mini and be done with that whole terrible idea.

An 'L' shaped adapter that you bolt the monitor arm through into the back of the monitor and then the Mac Mini sits on the top sounds like a great idea. Easy to remove if you need to without removing the monitor, easy to run cables.

A very power hungry and potentially noisy monitor...
I have an older 27" imac, but target display mode no longer seems to work since updating to a newer macos, i haven't looked into it much as i don't really need it.

We had to replace one recently, and ended up with a Mac Studio and a big Dell display.
Technically more computer, definitely more money.
A beefy Mac mini was considered, but my wife is used to three displays, and Mac mini support for more than two is klugey.

Still too many Docker images that won't run on Apple Silicon, even with docker buildx build --platform linux/amd64,linux/arm64 .
I guess Apple really is only interested in content consumption now, so actual content producers and developers will be flocking back to the AMD and Intel camps over the coming years.

I am extremely sure big ram is still an option; it's a huge point of the system.
I am fairly sure there will still be PCI-E, and probably some other much faster proprietary bus.

Probably one of the several wacom+multitouch laptops that cost substantially less than a mac... you can get a pretty fast one used for under a grand, too, the RDF protects used mac values right up until they are abandoned by Apple so it's hard to save much that way, but with PCs it's easy.
