Intel Says It'll Deliver 2025 Chip Tech a Half Year Early (cnet.com) 35
After years of trouble and delay, Intel's chipmaking business finally has some good news to report. The most advanced manufacturing process the company has committed to will arrive in the second half of 2024, six months earlier than planned. From a report: Intel fell behind rivals Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Samsung because of problems modernizing its manufacturing, and it convinced chip designer Pat Gelsinger to return to the company as chief executive in 2021. Shortly afterward, Intel laid out a road map that meant five improvements to its manufacturing processes in four years, with manufacturing processes named Intel 7, Intel 4, Intel 8, Intel 20A and Intel 18A. Each step improves a chip's performance relative to its power consumption. Those steps are the foundation of a plan to catch up to rivals in 2024 and surpass them in 2025.

given that modern CPUs have a voltage of about 1.2V, that would be suitable for laptop computers.
Even if this is on the 12V rail, it means 240W, which high, but acceptable for HEDT beasts.
AMD's threadripper 3990X has a 280W default TDP.

It would be fairer to say that's its maximum rather than its default. I have a TR3 3960X and yes it will draw 280W out of the wall if I'm hitting it hard enough, but at that point I'm probably exporting 8k video footage or something where I'm legitimately thankful that I have that amount of computing power to draw on in the first place.

Thanks! I hadn't thought of that. From doing electrical work, components are often marked like "20A" so Amps came directly to mind and I didn't consider the low voltage used by CPUs. I looked up "Intel 20A" and it actually means Angstrom for the component scale...

Except that it's not the same 'kid', as there is a new management team. Once upon a time Intel did lead device physics, and with management that cares about it once again and is willing to invest in capital and personnel, they may be able to be successful even if they won't be leading rivals as much.

I love how their newer chips, that are still faster than last year's model are complete trash, but Intel's on year 4 of doing exactly that and they just put out a press release promising they'll have their shit together in another 2-3 years (which likely means 4-5).
AMD is just doing the Tick Tock release that Intel used to do until they couldn't figure out how to Tick again.

As for why is the 2022 AMD drop trash? That's simple- for the same reason Intel's gen 9+ were compared to their AMD counterparts- because the Intel parts perform better, are cheaper, and have more future-proof interfaces. Making one wonder how in any value evaluation, one would be led to purchase a 2022 AMD part.
I expect Zen4 to kick ass, but the Zen2+3 re-release is embarrassing.

I agree. AMD CPU design has been exceptionally good for quite a while now. It is highly likely that AMD can keep that up. Outside of pure CPU speed, AMD was basically always significantly better than Intel. Just remember, for example, how long before Intel they moved the memory-controller into the CPU.
As to TMSC and Samsung, they both have an excellent track-record in this business and there is no reason to expect that will change.

AMD has had as many complete whiffs as they've had triumphs.
The "generally better" claim is nearly laughable when considering pre-Zen3 parts.
And as we sit right now, Alder Lake has applied enough pressure that AMD is now re-issuing Zen2 parts in an attempt at competing at the low end, where they simply cannot.
Now, I expect this to change when Zen4 comes around, but it can't be denied that newest dump of chips is Waste-Of-Silicon status.

Let's talking about the FX-8xxx chips. The ones that AMD marketed as "8 Core" (even though they were 4), and were subsequently found guilty of false advertising for. The chips that at $100 more than a competing Intel chip, performed around 50% worse.

Bulldozer/Piledriver were flat out worse than Sandy Bridge in every way (price, performance, power, efficiency, total power use) - that is a fact. It isn't something anyone needs to understand, it just is. It is quantifiable, measured, and well documented.

The 4500 and 5500 are reclaimed silicon. They're monolithic dies- APUs that had broken GPUs.
Just like the 6500XT, which is a reclaimed silicon GPU.
The funniest part of this, is that in this new release, the best CPU you can pair with a 6500XT, is an Intel, since it's 4 PCIe lane-limited.
This produces hilarious results where a 12100F + a 6500XT is 79% more performant than a 5500 with a 6500XT.
For less money.

Yea, not the most popular opinion, but I live in Oregon and they still make investments here, and if they got back to bending sand as good as anybody, that would be fine by me. The more options we have in terms of foundry capability, the better.
