Mercedes-Benz Puts 5,600 Workers On Vacation In Brazil Due To Chips Shortage (reuters.com) 8
Mercedes-Benz will put more than five thousand workers on collective vacation in two plants in Brazil due to the shortage of semiconductor chips, the company said on Monday. Reuters reports: The production stoppage will happen from April 18 to May 3 and includes 5,000 employees in the Sao Bernardo do Campo plant and 600 in the Juiz de Fora factory, located in the Brazilian states of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, respectively. Mercedes said it is adjusting its production of trucks, truck cabins, bus chassis and other auto parts due to the global semiconductor supply crisis. The company had already put about 1,200 workers on collective vacation with pay in March because of supply chain shortages, according to the metalworkers union from the Sao Bernardo do Campo region.

so they can show they are better than the Jeep guys, since their parts are more expensive
Dude, have you ever actually driven a Jeep lately, or ever? Over my days, I've replaced two motors in late 90s Grand Cherokees because they blew piston skirts before 50k miles, fixed sway bars that literally pulled studs off the frame (shit weld, I guess), and more front disc brake jobs than I cared to count because the brake balance was always off. Now my friend has two Wranglers 2021&22 that both create unrecoverable steering shimmy when driven at highway speeds -- it's pretty damn scary to see it happen, your only option is to pull into the shoulder to slow down to ~40mph.
My BMW is almost 20 years old now, has 250k on it and still drives great. I replace the brakes every 5 years or so, whenever the pad wear sensor flags it. The seat is literally a custom mold of my ass at this point. Sure, parts sometimes break, and when they do they can sometimes be expensive, but I'll take this experience over my old Jeeps any day of the week.
But also, I kind of think cars are a lot like hard drive manufacturers -- sometimes they produce bad lots, some people get burned, and they are forever scorned. Others get lucky with a solidly built unit and will rave about it in comparison to their past experiences with other manufacturers.
Sort of like this post. It's all very anecdotal.
