Seagate Unveils CORTX Object Storage Software with Lyve Drive Rack Hardware Reference Design

New submitter kyubre writes: Seagate has unveiled CORTX, an open-source S3-compatible object storage software, today at their Datasphere virtual event. The source for this software-defined-storage (SDS) platform is hosted on Github. Seagate has also organized a group of open source researchers and developers in this space under the 'CORTX Community' moniker. As part of the Github repository, Seagate is providing a pre-built virtual machine image that enables users to get a quick start with testing. Seagate is a hardware vendor at its core, and as part of the CORTX initiative, it is also introducing the Lyve Drive Rack - a reference architecture supported by Seagate and available later this year with 20TB HAMR drives. The Lyve Drive Rack is expected to serve a variety of use-cases including backup/restore, big data and analytics, AI & ML, file sharing and synchronization, as well as video surveillance. Each rack node can support up to 106 drives, and a cluster can scale up as necessary.

I wouldn't want either. "Object storage" is for people that don't understand relational databases.

Many "object databases" are implemented by using a relational DB at a lower level. If you just use SQL and use it competently, you can get better performance, better reliability, and a better mental model of what is actually going on.

See also: younger devs fresh out of school who can't be bothered to learn SQL. I've worked with a few of these types and good god it can be infuriating.

What I find most frustrating is when I bring up synchronization, replication, and logging, and they reply "With an object database you don't have to worry about any of that."

Object Storage != Object Database

Object storage can be implemented at different levels, even replacing the filesystem by storing interlinked objects on a raw device. But it is still a database.

Oh, there is a benefit. The problem is that ten people have twelve different ideas as to how objects should work, hence you get locked into a particular language. Thus Gemstone forces you to work with Smalltalk and AllegroCache forces you to work with Lisp. In the end people not using X's language of choice won't be happy with X.

This is not an Object Database nor MinIO (though it can be abused for either purpose if for some reason someone wants to).

This is more of a low level file system. I can see the connections though, at some level a filesystem consists of file objects (AKA inodes) that can be looked up using metadata that is typically stored in directories (which are specifically structured files, and so are found in inodes==objects).

One can use a general purpose relational database to provide the directory structure of a file
