Nvidia Launches GeForce GTX 1660 Super For Faster 1080p Gaming (hothardware.com) 14

MojoKid writes: NVIDIA is expanding its GeForce GTX family of GPUs today with a pair of new Turing-based graphics cards, the GeForce GTX 1660 Super and GeForce GTX 1650 Super. As their mode numbers suggest, these new cards reside above their "non-Super" branded counterparts in NVIDIA's line-up, but a notch below GeForce GTX Ti variants. The GeForce GTX 1660 Super is somewhat of a cross between standard GTX 1660 and a 1660 Ti. The GeForce GTX 1660 Super has a similar number of CUDA cores and texture units to the vanilla GTX 1660, but with faster 14 Gbps GDDR6 memory. The GeForce GTX 1660 Super has higher GPU and memory clocks than a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, however. In its price range, the GeForce GTX 1660 Super appears to be a solid value. Its gaming performance is strong, especially at 1080p resolution and generally faster than AMD's Radeon RX 590. The cards are also power-efficient, cool and quiet, and the GPUs are significantly overclockable as well. GeForce GTX 1660 Super cards should be available at retail today for around $230, with GTX 1650 Super on its way late next month.

in the Graphics card industry. I've been rocking an old RX580 mining card for months now and aside from it crashing in Far Cry 3 (but not Blood Dragon, go figure) it's been solid as a rock. Meanwhile you can get an 8gb 580 with a copy of Borderlands 3 for $160-$180 on Newegg all day long (mind you, after rebates, but I haven't had any problem with those and I just use the cards at the Grocery story so I can keep swiping them until they're out of money).

  • WTF is "Turing-based"? Why sully the name of a great man with your commercial junk?

    • Lots of people use GPUs for mathmatics rather than gaming (not me, I'm a ninny).
    • It's a new kind of math co-processor. It helps a lot in a lot of situations, including modern "AI" kind of applications that use neural nets.

It seems that gamers are paying for AI R&D and Nvidia are trying to make cards that are both good at gaming and AI. I guess they know the costs but surely at some point the AI side will split off and they'll make Video cards for gaming and AI cards for AI instead of trying to make one size fit all.

        • Could be, they already have a line of cards that's more for number crunching than gaming. And remember when they tried to make dedicated physics(Physx) cards?

    • WTF is "Turing-based"? Why sully the name of a great man with your commercial junk?

Turing-based is a buzzword that is used to trigger idiots who don't realise that NVIDIA has been naming generations after famous mathematicians and scientists for over a decade.

It works well too. Constantly people come out to announce their ignorance. Today that person was you.

Nvidia scientists' last names as internal code for each microarchitecture generation during development. Intel's codenames are based on local lakes, cities, or other features; AMD mostly uses islands and constellations.
Prior to Turing, Nvidia used Pascal, Maxwell, Tesla, and several other "big names" to delineate GPU/GPGPU architectures.

the 2060 Super is about 5-7% faster. This should put a 1660 Super on par with a 1070 minus the extra 2gb of RAM, meaning it'll take a big hit at 4k but do 1440p just fine.
  • NVIDIA has lost the frigging plot. AMD had them in such a panic mode that since the announcement of their first RTX graphics card they have completely shat the bed when it comes to making their GPU portfolio confusing as heck with all relationships between price/performance, and the typical discounting cycle completely lost.

Props to AMD though, while I don't appreciate the mess they made of NVIDIA, I definitely appreciate a bit of competition bringing prices down. It would just suck to be one of the people

  • Nvidia should now develop AI to make a sensible selection out of this pile of cards. I doubt it will get simpler in the future.

If all else fails, lower your standards.
