Amazon Just Brought Prime Video To VR Headsets (variety.com) 55

An anonymous reader quotes Variety: Oculus VR headset users just got one more video service to watch in their virtual living rooms: Amazon's Prime Video service went live on Oculus Go, Quest and Samsung Gear VR headsets with a dedicated Prime Video VR app Wednesday.

In addition to access to the entire Prime Video catalog, Prime Video VR will also feature select 360-degree video films. At launch, these include "Invasion!" from Baobab Studios and "Greenland Melting" from Frontline and NOVA, according to a blog post.

The app offers users a way to watch Prime Video titles in a virtual theater setting, and also comes with voice search for the entire Prime catalog. Prime Video VR is at launch only available to Prime subscribers in the U.S. and the U.K., but there does seem to be a way for users who aren't Prime subscribers to browse their Amazon Video purchases.

  • Something no one asked for that offers a worse viewing experience than just watching it on a nice TV. What's next? A VR experience where you can try on other VR headsets?

I don't know about that. I have a PSVR, and some of the VR videos on YouTube are pretty amazing. Particularly the scuba diving videos where they are swimming with sharks or dolphins, and there's a few good rain forest videos too that feature some wildlife that approach close to the camera. It definitely adds another layer of immersion. It's unfortunate they didn't do this for the PSVR as well, since they already have the Prime app for the PS4.

Why... yes. Now that you mention it.

  • Once again, those of us with PCs are treated as second class citizens as a thank you for our early support.

    • PCVR is dying, period. I say this as someone with several thousand dollars in PCVR gear. It is and always will be a dev kit for mobile VR. The future of VR is mobile and console, period.

People who watch porn only in front of them instead of around them _are_ second class citizens.

Being an early adopter is its own reward, because you get to play with new toys. If you find it insufficiently rewarding, stop it, and let someone else do it.

So on the surface Amazon Prime finally got something that Netflix, Hulu, etc. has already had for quite awhile now. Unfortunately it's not that simple. The Amazon Prime app isn't up to the same standards (yet) as versions on other systems. So far it lacks the ability to limit search to free offerings, and it lacks badging for items to let viewers know which are free and which aren't. The user experience is thus searching for something, and then clicking into each match to see whether or not it's free. A jaded person might think that this is deliberate to get an extra .01% to purchase non-free titles at the expense of everyone else's user experience. The current version also lacks the ability to download now and watch later.

At the same time they were releasing these new versions they were also announcing that they were cutting support for older versions that run on some Blu-ray players. These versions they're cutting support for don't have the broken search facilities that the new ones do. As the hardware / software are pretty static on these devices, and they're clearly still being used it's also questionable why Amazon would be killing support on them.

    • Hmmmm, but Prime Video lets you download stuff to watch offline. Also, the "Included With Prime" filter on the home page shows only free stuff. Not sure what device you are using.

    • Comment removed based on user account deletion
      • On the actual Fire TV Stick (we have an old one but they're still updating the software) there is no way to tell until you click into the title. You can browse prime-only, but you can't search that way, and there's no indication in the search results.

  • ... if it were available on Steam VR for my Vive (and soon Index). I didn't build a top end gaming machine for VR so I could watch something on an underpowered, battery limited standalone. I won't buy Oculus or Samsung for various reasons anyway.

I've seen prototype content like the stuff described a year or so ago. A documentary filmed this way is utterly fascinating. It can't be compared to watching one on TV. You get the impression of literally standing there, and rather than following the "shot" as it wo

So do I want to use the Facebook headset or the Samsung headset?
I am not going into VR until I can plug them in like a monitor and have a driver for them. Not making a shitty account to use them.

Good luck with that. Your best bet is any of the SteamVR headsets, but for some reason Amazon is apparently not supportin g SteamVR even though it is the most popular VR platform.

    • can any one help me on how can i delete amazon order history [expresstricks.com]. Is this right Archiving an order does not delete an item completely, but it does hide the item from your default order page. However, archived items will still show up if they are specifically searched for on the order page.

  • Will there be releases of the 3D versions of some movies?

You know you've landed gear-up when it takes full power to taxi.
