The Next Flagship iPhone Will Support Apple Pencil and 512GB Flash Storage, Says Report (appleinsider.com) 93

Next month, Apple is expected to unveil three new iPhones, each with differing specs/features. According to analyst firm Trendforce, the large 6.5-inch "flagship" model will support up to 512GB of onboard flash storage. Apple Pencil support will also be "offered as an option," although the company didn't specify which models will support the stylus. Apple Insider reports: The company expects that the the 6.1-inch LCD version will come with Face ID, Dual-SIM technology. The firm expects it to retail for between $699 and $749. The 5.8-inch OLED iPhone will be priced at $899 to $949. The 6.5-inch device will come in storage capacities up to 512GB, with one variant of the size potentially having dual-SIM support and expected to be "limited within $1,000 threshold as to encourage purchasing from consumers," according to Trendforce. Both the 5.8- and 6.5-inch OLED models are expected to have 4GB of RAM. The 6.1-inch LED devices will have 3GB of RAM, the same as the iPhone X. The analyst firm believes that all three models are expected to ship in September and October.

    Apple still sells lots of 5SE phones, brand new, because of the number of people who just don't want or can't hold comfortably the larger phones. I wish they'd take those brisk sales numbers as a hint and make an updated phone with those dimensions.
    • Fuck, man. I so badly want an updated SE with wireless charing and the taptic engine. I really hope they don't screw that market segment out of it...

      I'm not sure why you're saying "5". The iPhone SE [apple.com] exists and has "the same advanced chip used in iPhone 6s".

      But I agree, that size is the right size.

    • Honestly, you should probably open your mind and try out a larger phone.

      I thought the same thing as you, and groused about it. When I got the larger version on an upgrade I found it hard to hold and use... for about 5 days. In 2 weeks, whenever I pick up my mothers smaller iPhone5, it seems to slip out of my hands. It's too small to use now!

      Unfortunately, the smaller form factor is now a thing of the past (Android or Apple). Best to go ahead and get used to you new world. :)

      Apple reminds me a lot of Ingsoc... You must always believe what you're told by the inner party even if it contradicts what they said earlier. Styluses are the future, styluses have always been the future.

      Now it's time for the 2 minutes hate on Android.

    • Or maybe Steve Jobs was prone to exaggeration sometimes? I can't think that he was a tech visionary unless I also insist he could never be wrong? Oh, okay. Simple little world you live in. Mostly regular shapes and primary colours, I'm guessing. Have fun in there, and try not to bump your head.

        Not at all. Phablet and mini tablets were a popular trend long before Steve Jobs died as well. It took his death for Apple to actually start working on an release the iPad mini. Steve jobs was nothing if not relentlessly stubborn when it came to his beliefs. It what made Apple a once great and innovative company. They were never ones for jumping into trends.

    • I do believe he was talking about the need for a stylus as a requisite input device, not a stylus as an optional accessory for specific uses.

      • He also said that to make a decent usable app for tablet you can't ever have an iPad mini, to use a phone properly it needs to be smaller than the hand. I suggest you don't put the goalposts down, you'll be running backwards and forwards across the entire field with them.

        • I'm not claiming he's never said anything stupid or wrong, just that in this particular case, I think his quote is being misconstrued.

          And out of curiosity, what is with the Internet idea that if a given person ever says a single thing that's later proven wrong, that person is instantly a useless git?

  • Looks like Apple and most of the phone making industry have run out of ideas. What they are producing is a bog standard rectangular phone with all the same apps that are on nearly all other phones. Phones are at a point where they have peaked. Slightly faster cpus and slightly better cameras won't justify the cost of an upgrade. People do need phone, but no longer the latest and greatest. App developers want to target as many users as possibe so that means coding apps in such a way that they can well on old
