Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Boosts CPU and GPU Performance, Delivers 4K HDR Capture, 3x Faster AI Processing (hothardware.com) 48

MojoKid writes: Qualcomm provided a deep-dive view today of its Snapdragon 845 mobile processor platform that it recently announced, highlighting key advancements in what the company is referring to as a completely new silicon design. The new chip now employs a Kyro 385 CPU with four high performance cores at 2.8GHz (25 percent faster than the previous gen Snapdragon 835) and four "efficiency" cores operating at 1.7GHz. The new chip also includes the new Spectra 280 image signal processor (ISP). Compared to its predecessor, the image signal processor (ISP) in the Snapdragon 845 promises a 64x uplift in the ability to capture high dynamic range (HDR) color information for 4K HDR video capture and playback. The chip's new Adreno 630 GPU promises a 30 percent boost in gaming performance compared to its predecessor, along with room-scale VR/AR experiences that support 6 degrees of freedom along with simultaneous localization and mapping, or SLAM. Finally, the new SoC platform incorporates Qualcomm's second-generation gigabit LTE modem: the Snapdragon X20. This Cat 18 modem supports peak download speeds of 1.2Gbps along with 5x carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO, and Dual SIM-Dual VoLTE. Qualcomm says that the first Snapdragon 845 processors will begin shipping in production devices in early 2018.

"Qualcomm says that the first Snapdragon 845 processors will begin shipping in production devices in early 2018."

Translation: The Galaxy S9 will have this CPU.
A shame that Samsung have 'pulled an Apple' and decided flexibility is out the window.
They've basically stopped making their top end phones, with a flat screen anymore at all. It's all curved rubbish. Plus they've ditched the home button :/

I bet they copy Apple and remove the headphone jack too. Used to love their stuff (had 5 of their phones now) but I think I'm done with them.

    • I think the curved screens are part of planned obsolescence, they make it impossible for a case to protect the phone adequately.

      • Yup, I switched to those tempered glass ones about a year back and I was shocked how good they are.

Virtually impossible to apply a tempered glass protector to a curved screen. Plus the accidental screen presses with your palm.

        Nope!

I don't even use those, simply having the case a few mm past the screen on all 4 sides makes the case much more effective.

      • Plausibly.

I wonder if a 'planned obsolescence' email will ever leak from Samsung?

    • They've basically stopped making their top end phones

Practically no one needs a Galaxy. Look at the Nexus/Pixel lines, Nokia phones, and OnePlus.

They will probably end up with Snapdragon 845 SoCs next year too. Probably a bit later than Samsung though.

      • Wireless charging, home buttons, headphone jacks, curved screens - etc. Most of the alternative phones have an issue that bugs me.

Honestly, I think I'm sticking with my Note 5 as long as humanly possible.

  • The Ghost In The Shell "reboot" movie was bad enough. Wish I could unwatch it, but I can't. Adding insult to injury, "Deep Dive" is now becoming a buzzword.
  • Thats cool, didn't know that's the name for VR+AR is XR and not MR.

Was disappointed the Mixed Reality MR headsets that came out, is just a branding name and not really a AR+VR set, its VR only.

    • Thats cool, didn't know that's the name for VR+AR is XR and not MR.

It isn't, that's bullshit. AR is VR where you don't draw the background, that's it.

      • It isn't, that's bullshit. AR is VR where you don't draw the background, that's it.

AR content is designed to interact with real-world environments and objects besides the user. Traditional VR is not; it is a wholly-generated environment. There are different words for these things for a reason. If you're chasing 3D-rendered aliens around a 3D-rendered table, it's VR; if you're chasing those aliens around your kitchen table then it's AR.

Perhaps you could call it AR if you have VR where the background is a duplicate of the real world, but I haven't seen anything like that. Most AR systems pr

  • Integrated X20 modem is nice, and given Qualcomm's expertise it will be very fast.
CPU is another story though, according to their own numbers it still will be slower than A11. That PA Semi purchase seems better by the day, Apple is walking all over the competition.

  • Some people may consider this to be inconsequential, but we're seeing for the first time since 2015 the "LITTLE" CPU cores in the "big.LITTLE" CPU configurations updated from A53 to A55.
