Scientists Create World's First 3D-Printed 3D Printer 71

MikeChino writes "Researchers at Germany's Doppelbock University just opened the door to the future of rapid prototyping technology by developing the world's first 3D-printed 3D printer. Dubbed the Ecophage, the duplicitous device is capable of using readily available materials to create copies of itself – albeit at a slightly smaller scale. Best of all, it's outfitted with a built-in material re-processor that can convert virtually any carbon-based substance into filament for 3d-printing."

Can we just skip this April Fools shit from now on? It's just a fucking waste of time.

No really, it's gotten really old, and there's no giggle value in it anymore. I'd just like to be able to tune in like every other day, and get my usual news. This Prank-Tee-Hee-Hee thing has totally jumped the shark, and nowadays it's just a nuisance.

      • You are forgetting the giggle value derived from watching you lose your cool.
        • I'm not sure if it's more giggle or guffaw.

I got some smiles and laughter out of the various sites today.

That's pretty much what I just said in another story. "It's NOT FUNNY!!!111" , ALL DAY LONG! Yuk, yuk, yuk. Poor babies. :-)

          That's called trolling, asshat.

Every fucking geek blogger is trying to be funny to day, and most of them are failing. When I want humor, I know how to go to www.theonion.com.

        • The Onion needs to find and publish on the 1st of April a notable and mildly implausible story which is completely true but all the other news sources are waiting for the 2nd to report (for obvious reasons). That would be one of the best April Fools pranks.

      • No really, it's gotten really old, and there's no giggle value in it anymore. I'd just like to be able to tune in like every other day, and get my usual news.

Easy solution, just align your every other day to skip April 1st next year.

      • This one's pretty funny I thought. Slashdot doesn't write these, it is just collecting the stories from other sites. And Slashdot is not the only site doing this.

This day happens every year, people have had enough advance warning. If serious people want to do serious stuff instead they should spend the day doing their taxes, visiting a marriage counselor (probably long overdue), or having a colonoscopy (they're funnier than they sound).

  • Not bad, but I'm still waiting for the April 1st where MADD says "I've you've just had a couple beers, you're still probably good to go."
  • the duplicitous device is capable of using readily available materials to create copies of itself – albeit at a slightly smaller scale.

I propose we give these printed "offspring" citizenship. Frankly a 3-D printer has to be more intelligent than anyone on Jersey Shore. And if these progeny can also 3D print, they are contributing more to society than anyone I've seen in reality shows.

Funny, I was thinking it would have printed, "yo dawg, I heard you like 3d printing, so I 3d printed you a 3d printer so you can 3d print while you 3d print."

    Hello, I'll blow good karma

This ROT13 crap does nothing worthwhile. It's not funny, it's not clever, God, it's not even interesting. Yes, it will go away tomorrow, but the bloody editors should just drop it. Damn it, off to Reddit.

    • by agm ( 467017 )

They should at least take into account the local time of the reader. April 1st was yesterday.

      • by sl3xd ( 111641 )

        Local time is irrelevant.

Being a sophisticated internetizen, realize "April Fool's" is fair game as long as there's some place on this planet where the date is still April 1. At the time of this posting, the sun is still many hours from setting on April 1.

Given the way the international date line is drawn, the same sunrise on April 1st (in Tonga) was the same sunrise as Mar 31st in Alaska's Aleutian Islands. What's more: The Sun shone in Tonga on April 1 before the Sun rose for Mar 31 in Alaska.

        So deal wit

        • by agm ( 467017 )

April fools days is April the 1st, not April the 2nd. It was yesterday. It's not "proper" to prank someone after noon on April the 1st.

Not that it matters. I won't be reading any slashdot articles until the stop the silly ROT13 silliness.

        • As long as someone on the planet doesn't appreciate the joke, then it's April Fool's Day somewhere.

Reddit? Really? That's like saying, "Aw shucks. My favorite pizza place is closed. I'm off to eat dog shit, instead."
    • I agree... I look forward to April Fool's jokes each year, and can see how this one would be great fun if we were kids playing an April Fool's Joke on a teacher, or perhaps close friends that have a playful sort of rivalry -- but when it's just an anonymous change making a website a PITA to read without a bookmarklet, it's a lot less entertaining.

    • Adding: To be fair, I *do* find some of the headlines quite funny, and most of us already get a better gist of the article contents from reading other people's comments...it's just the presentation drags it down.

I like it. I know which is which. The dumb stuff is the corporate viral marketing that has seemed to attach itself to this.
    • by sl3xd ( 111641 )

I find it entertaining to laugh at chumps like you who can't let things go; so it's funny and worthwhile to me.

    • by antdude ( 79039 )

Reddit has its uhh "achievements" which are annoying. I don't know what is the point of that since nothing happens?

  • Save yourselves!
  • I mean, if we all got together at the end of the day and declared that Slashdot has given us the best April Fools' Day celebration ever and that they could never possibly top it in a million lifetimes, would it convince them to stop?

I get that this is April Fools joke, but it might be worthwhile to mention that there is a real project aimed at accomplishing this goal: RepRap [reprap.org].
  • I, for one, welcome our new 3d-printed overlords. I'd like to remind them that as an engineer I can be helpful in improving all aspects of their design from mechanical and electrical engineering to ASIC, FPGA and software development.

3D printing of 3D printers (i.e. self-replicating printers) is the goal of a number of projects, including the Reprap project [reprap.org]. Most of the structural parts are printable. People are working on open source printable electronics. Chips and actuators can't be easily printed yet.

Even if a 3D printer were "outfitted with a built-in material re-processor that can convert virtually any carbon-based substance into filament for 3d-printing", it would need a power source too. I recall once seeing a plan for an automated wheeled vehicle that would collect and burn plants for fuel. (I searched but can't find the original source.) But it would have to roam far and wide to get enough to make a copy of itself.
