Using Kinect With Your PS3 79

baxpace writes "A tutorial posted on Shantanugoel tech blog indicates how you can use your Microsoft Kinect sensor with a PS3. As the posts suggest, the software is at a pre-alpha quality state, meaning that some libraries need to be improved in order to boost performance and features, but it's a start nonetheless."

Won't Sony sue him for adding functionality to the PS3 that didn't ship with it? Isn't the rule that they can only remove functionality after their precious little console ships?

For the curious, the PS3 does not need to be able to run unsigned code.

The methodology is fairly simple. As far as I can tell, the Kinect sensor is connected to a PC running Windows, then software on the PC interprets movements captured by the sensor and translates them into controller movements, which are sent to the PS3 using diyps3controller, which emulates a PS3 controller using Bluetooth.

Pretty bloody clever but the lag must be awful.

wish I had mod points ^^^ should have been in TFA in the first place! +!
    • Having played a demo Kinect in the shop I'd say the lag was awful anyway. Mind you, after 5mins of jumping about the lag will be about right. After 10mins I'll take your Bluetooth version. Why do these people want to get me out of the sofa to jump around? It took years to get this unfit!

roger that, the kinect is kind of laggy on my Xbox and its even more laggy on my pc, I'd HATE to see the lag using a pc as a bridge device. yikes.

    • Nice and all, but:

the software is at a pre-alpha quality state, meaning that some libraries need to be improved in order to boost performance and features

WTF? I thought pre-alpha meant "buggy as hell, try it if you really want to see something cool, but don't count on it working for more than a few minutes." Since when did it mean "some libraries need to be improved in order to boost performance and features"? I thought that stage is beta/pre-release.

      • "some libraries need to be improved in order to boost performance and features" is a catch-all that really could describe anything that isn't RC or RTM; pre-alpha, alpha, pre-beta (if that exists), beta...there's probably one library that is working well enough to be complete, making 'all libraries...' inaccurate, and 'most libraries...' something to skip over.

well since beta/pre-release has come to mean finished product, they might as well say pre-alpha when they mean beta/pre-release.
        • so my yet-to-be-written (or thought-about) program can be called almost-released-to-testing? Be ready for the coolest app from me soon!

I was already crying when Heavy Rain forced me to purchase a Sony product. Now you want me to 'improve' it by sticking on Microsoft peripherals?

I already have enough self-loathing, thank you very much.

It's not YOUR PS3. It's Sony's PS3. If it was yours, you could run whatever code you wanted on it.
    • This becomes the 3-year-old (as in children) argument. In whole, it goes like this:

      10 PRINT "A: IT'S MINE"
      20 PRINT "B: NO IT'S MINE"
      30 PRINT "A: NO IT'S MINE"
      40 GOTO 20
  • Now for Sony to sue the guy for creating it and Sony suing Slashdot for linking it since we recently learned on slashdot in the past few days that even linking is illegal. and finally ending with a Judge's order to turn over the ip of everyone that clicked the link in the article... fuck sony http://sites.google.com/site/eclement/ps3jailbreak [google.com]

I'd have thought Sony would be quite pleased. Microsoft just spent millions on development, and BAM! - ported to the PS3 at zero cost to Sony. Meanwhile you still can't use Move on an Xbox, and there is probably no community interest in making it happen.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has to be crying into their cornflakes.

    • I'm here to tell you that you haven't learned ANYTHING about the law here on /. and that is probably why your post is so clueless and stupid.

My excitement over the PS3 Move controller was quickly subdued when I discovered I can't play the sports and gladiator games using online multiplayer, only local multiplayer. Now the controllers are sitting and collecting dust.
Given that complex games work online I can't see why Move games are any different. From an end-user perspective, it's really lame.

    • I still get them out to play a game or two of Boccie any maybe Frisbee golf, but those were the only games that were any good.

No spitting on the Bus! Thank you, The Mgt.
