A topic we've touched on several times in the past here is discussed in the answers to another of Gamasutra's Questions of the week. Underrated games are the order of the day. From the article: "Natural Selection by Unknown Worlds is an outstanding work combining FPS action and RTS strategy elements. NS has gained a great following, but it has been overshadowed by success of Counter-Strike. The game play of NS naturally draws players to work together. I have always found the teamwork in NS better than most other FPS network games. The variety of classes in Aliens and Marines provides a lot of depth of play to experience. The RTS elements in the game were beautifully put together." I've always been partial to Shiny's Sacrifice , a weird little First Person RTS title where you play a mage that summons all of your units. Review: Black and White 2 165

Peter Molyneux's Black and White was universally hailed as an innovative switch-up in gaming prior to its launch, and frustrated critics referred to it as a toy once they'd had a chance to see the depth of the title's gameplay. The design of the sequel, Black and White 2, seems to be a deliberate response to the denouncements leveled at the original game. The result is a more traditional, less open-ended RTS with some identity issues. Despite that, being a god still has as much appeal as it did back in the days of Populous. Review: Dragonshard 171

The Dungeons and Dragons license has graced some truly fine videogames. Planescape: Torment and the Baldur's Gate sagas are some of the finest gaming experiences RPG fans can cite. Dragonshard is the first melding of Dungeons and Dragons with the Real-Time Strategy genre, combining traditional RTS action with RPG elements to create a unique whole. While the game doesn't redefine my understanding of the RTS genere, it's very different from your normal title and is well worth checking out. Review: Dungeon Siege II 300

Like most of the games that Blizzard has produced, the original Diablo laid down many of the rules for the hack and slash adventure genre. Followers of the Diablo design have been numerous, but few have been as well received as 2002's Dungeon Siege. The sequel, imaginatively named Dungeon Siege II, follows faithfully in the footsteps of the original fantasy RPG from Gas Powered Games. Solid, satisfying combat and a worthwhile storyline mark this solid genre title. Read on for my impressions of this medieval slasher.

Total Annihilation Sequel Preview 51

An anonymous reader writes "Fans of much loved RTS Total Annihilation will be excited to hear that a spiritual successor is in the works under the name Supreme Commander. Information on this title has been scarce until today, when Gamespy released a preview with screenshots galore. The preview contains an overview of the game, the storyline and, coming tommorrow, an interview with Chris Taylor."

Total Annihilation Remake Released 93

Pxtl writes "The long-awaited remake of Total Annihilation (considered "#1 RTS of All Time" by Gamepsy), "Spring" has hit its first official public beta release. The game reimplements the original Cavedog game in a full 3d environment, replacing TA's fixed-angle view. It also brings other new features to the table, such as revised physics and a 1st-person-shooter mode. Spring reuses the original TA content and is backwards compatible with the old unit packs. While the game is currently win32 only, its source has been released under the GPL, so fixing that is only a matter of time. Get to the download page now and help out with the torrents."

In Space No One Can Hear You Sigh 242

Spacefaring races always seem to get into trouble, and game designers love to put us into the shoes of the explorers and soldiers of tomorrow. Unfortunately, futuristic titles can be just as tiresome as Dungeon Crawl #457. Both MechAssault 2 and Nexus: The Jupiter Incident are examples of this truism. Both games are well conceived, with fine pedigrees behind them, but neither manages to deliver satisfying gameplay or long-term enjoyment. Natural Selection v3.0 Final 52

iethree writes "Natural-Selection version 3.0 final is released today, after several years in beta. NS is the most popular third party mod for Half-Life, it features a combination of RTS and FPS to create one of the most unique games out there. You can view the changelog and read an interview with one of the creators discussing the changes in the final release and the future of Natural-Selection."

Fan Made Halo RTS, IloveBees Interview 26

By way of Evil Avatar, news of a Command and Conquer Generals mod to be set in the Halo universe. Entitled Halogen, the fan-made RTS appears to have much of the preliminary work completed already. Relatedly, TotalVideoGames is carrying an interview with ILoveBees actress Kristen Rutherford. She discusses her role as the schizoid AI in the Halo-Universe Alternate Reality Game. From the interview: "The characters in l love bees are all characters within the Haloverse. Melissa was the A.I. of the ship Apocalypso in the same way that Cortana was the A.I. for the Pillar of Autumn."

Another Star Wars RTS in the Works 27

Voodoo Extreme is reporting on a piece coming out in PCZone UK about another Star Wars Real Time-Strategy Game, to be called Empire at War. From the article: This new PC game is set two years before ANH with a certain amount of cross over from Episode 3. Screen shots look superb. It appears to include ground battles set in dessert and greenland areas with attacking AT-AT's and a new Imperial ground based vehicle called "TIE Crawlers" which I've not seen before (cross between a tank and a TIE Fighter).

Editorial: On the SpikeTV Video Game Awards 635

The best thing about the SpikeTV Video Game Awards show was that it was "only" two hours long. And that's really sad. Now that the business side of gaming has gained some attention, the next hurdle the gaming industry should be attempting to clear is an artistic one: games will never be seen as equals to movies or television if they and the culture that surrounds them are represented the way they were last night. The industry can do better. Read on for my reaction to last night's train wreck of an awards show.

Everquest 2 vs. World of Warcraft 110

Gamespy has a piece up today comparing and contrasting the feature sets of Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft. It's a pretty thorough story, covering the newb experience, combat, character customization and more. From the article: "In one corner, you have EverQuest II, the sequel to the undisputed heavyweight MMO champ EverQuest, the game that has probably caused more divorces than any other video game in the world. The Future of Star Wars Gaming 256

Reuters has an interview with LucasArts President Jim Ward up, and it goes into a good deal of depth about the present and future of Star Wars gaming. He suggests that Jump to Lightspeed is doing well commercially, mentions that there will be a Star Wars RTS in the next year or two, and again comfirms that there will be new Star Wars properties on TV. From the article: " We will have new live-action and animated TV shows over the next few years, and I think there's a bright future there for games based on these new properties as well as original Star Wars games like a new real-time strategy PC game that Petroglyph is developing for next year."

Review: Evil Genius 197

The drive to be an evil genius is an easily understandable one. Riches, power, eventual fame, and plenty of minions to order around are just some of the perks of the vocation. Vivendi's Evil Genius (flash required) gives you the opportunity to exercise your lust for worldly power in a seriously stylish way. A rich musical score, tons of polish, and enough dastardly deeds to keep even Dr. Claw happy are the game's high points. An overabundance of micromanagement and a lack of proper GUI interaction marrs what have could been a classic in the strategy genre. Read on for a more in-depth examination of the first real-time strategy game whose tag line could have been "Mwahahahahahahahaha!"

Hobbyist 'Spring' RTS Engine Takes Shape 53

Dragon45 writes "Some interesting developments have just occurred on the hobbyist RTS game engine scene. The Swedish Yankspankers, long known within the Total Annihilation community for their professional-caliber modifications and add-ons, have released the first screenshots and videos of Spring, a 3D RTS engine under development (and under wraps) for quite some time. It works. Apparently, real-time terrain deformation (Before|After) and network play are already working. Spring HQ has more information, and needless to say, this one is definitely worth a look." The official FAQ explains: "We aim to get an early test release out quite soon (within a month or so)", and the 'About' page explains that, as an initial starting point: "TA Spring reads the [Total Annihilation data] formats directly without conversions needed."

On Stratagus and Open Source Strategy Games 15

Thanks to LinuxDevCenter.com for its profile of open-source strategy game engine Stratagus, interviewing the creators of the multi-platform engine formerly known as Freecraft, before the makers "received a cease and desist order" from Blizzard over name/design similarities. The author explains: "There are no essential technical differences between Stratagus and FreeCraft - Stratagus continues where FreeCraft left off. The goal of making a customizable RTS engine remains the same, although the designers now de-emphasize compatibility with WarCraft 2." The piece also discusses future plans: "The big new technology under development for future versions of Stratagus is a meta-server which will enable the engine to connect Internet players to play together. 'We intend to add a team play mode where you can share resources and technologies with your allies. [This] will allow for a much better community with features such as online chat and user statistics,' says [lead programmer] Russell."

Swingin' Ape Takes Over StarCraft Ghost Development 20

Thanks to IGN PS2 for its news story discussing Blizzard's appointment of developer Swingin' Ape Studios, creators of Metal Arms: Glitch In The System, who will "henceforth develop StarCraft: Ghost, the oft delayed third-person action / adventure adaptation of Blizzard's acclaimed RTS franchise." The story notes: "Just two weeks earlier it was announced that Nihilistic, Ghost's former developer, would no longer be at the helm of the project. Nihilistic's departure was said to be the result of timing issues", and furthermore reveals: "Swingin' Ape will in the future collaboratively develop multi-platform titles with Blizzard based off Blizzard licenses."

VU Games Gives Away Ground Control, Soundtracks 30

Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to the free download page for PC RTS title Ground Control over at FilePlanet, "released for free" to help promote newly released Ground Control II, in a similar move to the recent free availability of VU Games' Tribes I and Tribes II. VU Games has also released the soundtrack to The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay for free download, as composed by Gustaf 'Lizardking' Grefberg, and previous free MP3 soundtracks have included Metal Arms: Glitch In The System and The Hobbit.
