Phenombecile800 writes "Al Gore's prediction of improved solar cells isn't so Fantasy Island as some accuse. First Solar, a start-up from Ariz. is making photovoltaic cells at a fraction of the usual cost. Their secret: ballooning the light-catching area "from postage-stamp to traffic-sign dimensions", reducing the manufacturing time to 1/10th of the competition, and thinning the active element to 1/100 the usual thickness over a glass substrate, which enables the production of large panels. And it's paying off for First Solar. Quoting IEEE Spectrum Online: "[First Solar's] got a multibillion-dollar order book, it's selling all the cells it can make, it's adding production capacity as fast as it can, and its stock price has rocketed from $25 to more than $250 in just 18 months.""
