notthatwillsmith writes "Despite never actually releasing the Phantom console, it looks like Phantom Entertainment (the company formerly known as Infinium Labs) may actually ship its sofa-friendly mouse/keyboard combo controller, the Lapboard, sometime this decade. The Lapboard is currently scheduled for a mid-June release at a price of $130, with the included laser mouse. Might this be enough to recoup the $73 million Infinium squandered on the Phantom console?"

  • I imagine you'll get naysayers who'll say things like 'Graphics are better on the PC!! I own a $4000 l337 gaming rig!' or whatever they say. Fact of the matter is the only thing stopping consoles from completely murdering PCs in the gaming department is the lack of a proper keyboard and mouse setup. Suddenly all those clunky FPS's on the consoles will become a lot more intuitive. You could use the internet on your console without any trouble. You could even go so far as to plunk a word processing program on
    • For me the attraction to console gaming is I don't need to read 6 pages of instructions of what key to press when and where and in combination with what and I don't need to rebind keys because I've got large hands versus the puny hands of the developer - that is, the attract for me, is the user friendly control pad.

I'm sure it'll suit some uses but a lot of folks seem keen on the control pad over a keyboard. Keyboards never really took off on the ps2 due to a lack of support & availability, so if thi
      • Nothing wrong with either of those, some of us simply prefer PC gaming to consoles, yes I have many consoles that gather dust (oddly my Atari 2600 sees more action these days than my PS2) not because I hate consoles, but I prefer to reinvent the games I play by modding them. This includes skinning and creating new models to import into the games, until a console can allow me that freedom (where I can skin and model on the console) I think the PC, for me at least will win out.

        For now.
        • Spot on, I still play Total Annihilation because of the mods out there for it, in particular TAWP which essentially makes it an entire new game.

I had GTA 3 on pc and when Vice City came out I then had a ps2 and thought hey I'll buy it for the ps2 so in 3-4-x years I can still play it without having to worry about OS changes etc. Totally different gaming experience :( Some games work well on a console, eg Gran Turismo, others not so well.

So I think PC game & consoles won't cross over for some time, well
      • I really think this type of peripheral is more for the PC gamers who want that "big screen" console experience. I know (back in my single days, at least) that I used to love hooking up my high-end gaming PC to the living room TV, so I could play Quake 3 on the 50-inch HDTV instead of my old 19-inch monitor. I don't think it's realistic to think that any console manufacturer is going to support mouse and keyboard, unfortunately.
When all other means of communication fail, try words.
