So how fragile is the electrical grid, and just what technical problems could shut down five reactors?"MIAMI, Feb 26, 2008 (AFP) — Five reactors at a nuclear power plant in Florida had gone down on Tuesday and two were now back online amid a massive power outage in the southern state, CNN reported. The report on the Turkey Point nuclear plant came as four million people had lost electricity in Miami and elsewhere in Florida, with traffic signals out and major delays on roads, authorities and media said.

Not surprising... it's FPL, after all. (Score:2)
This is the same power company that does everything in its power to make line-burial through areas with existing aboveground lines as expensive as they can possibly make it. For example, FPL won't bury lines unless the host municipality buys them a dedicated 20-foot easement adjacent to a public road for their exclusive use (at unholy cost, via eminent domain). Remember FPL's famous post-Wilma estimate th

I wish to god someone in Tallahassee would learn about microtunneling -- the technology that allows European power companies to run power lines through ancient city centers below centuries-old cobblestone streets without digging a single trench or disturbing so much as a pebble at the surface -- and politely inform FPL that they can either do the same throughout Florida, or wait to have their franchise sold to someone more interested in the satisfaction of their customers.
You know, that would work - only if Florida didn't have coral rock 6 inches below the surface (which is nearly impossible to dig through). And if they did have an underground power plan, one couldn't imagine a way that it would be cost effective to tunnel through all of FL. Plus, the water level throughout all of FL is about 10 feet - give or take a few. You would also have to make sure that you didn't hit that as well. The reason that works so well in Europe, is because Europe's geography works for th
