A big number, yes, but it does not mean half the world's population has a cell phone, since users in 59 countries average more than one per person. To mark the occasion, the firm has swept together a bunch of other interesting mobile-phone facts, including this one: 10 percent of the planet's inhabitants still have no access to wireless communications.
The big, big problem here is that everyone want to upgrade their phones, resulting in more and more landfill. Who is going to recycle these things? Sending them to third world countries is probably useless because people there also want the "latest features" and will probably just dump them as well. The manufacturers should take some responsibility for recycling...
