Stalling Cars Via OnStar: Hacker Dream Come True?

  • Due to the unique nature of OnStar and how it uses cellular signals, hackers are not only going to have to duplicate the equipment of Onstar to be able to send the signals to the vehicle, they are also going to have to figure out the necessary codes to "shut down" the car or to unlock it.
  • Who's going to prevent someone from walking into OnStar HQ and jumping on a computer? Suppose an employee gets canned and decides to get a little revenge on his way out by disabling every GM owner's car? This is not good!
  • As a white-hat, I'd just want to know how to block OnStar from turning off my vehicle: Especially if I was late with my payment to GMAC. My guess is a black-market EPROM, similar to what owners of the Buick Grand National had to buy if they wanted to turn off the annoying governor that capped them at 119.99999 mph. As a black-hat, I'd be thrilled to know that I could shut down any GM vehicle, especially if that vehicle belongs to a Fed, tailing me. GM will pontificate that the system is fool-proof, but yo

Talk is cheap because supply always exceeds demand.
