ryzvonusef writes "One enterprising individual has created the most secure way to wipe out Compact Discs, by using a step-up transformer and creating a 150,000 Volt pd, whilst a CD rotates in the middle.

The sparks arc through the metal in the CD and evaporates it, ripping it all off as the CD rotates. The CD is rendered transparent and unreadable. This may be the most secure method to remove data on conventional recordable CDs used in offices."

  • Geeky? Yes. Practical? No.

    Most writable CDs have a thin film on the top that actually hold the data. I've seen some you could just peel off. Throwing a CD in a fire is the quickest and easiest way to dispose of their data completely and permanently. Not green? How green is generating all that power? With the right rig you could fuel a generator with used CDs!

    As to hard drives, the best way to get rid of their data is dissassemble them and sand off all the oxide from the platters. Avtually, sanding would wo

      Wow, all I did with a cd I wanted destroyed was a few seconds in the microwave, at a law firm I worked at they had a little machine that carved bumps into the plastic but not the metallic film...if a guy really wanted he could figure out a way to steal that data....it just would be such a waste of time though...
