An anonymous reader writes "Switching from 1600x1200 to wide 1680x1050 to HD 1600x900 we are loosing more and more vertical space thus becoming less and less simple to read a full A4 page or a web page or a function call. What's the solution for retaining the screen height we need to be productive?"

I've not been happy with the widescreen movement myself. How often do you watch movies at your computer? How often do you read web pages that take advantage of anything over 1000 wide? But it gets harder and harder to find standard aspect ratio (4:3) monitors these days. The solution is 1920 x 1080. Acer makes a 22" 1920 x 1080 in the $150 range, and the 24" is around $200. I've been pleased with both. At work I'm lucky enough to have 2 x 22" 1920 x 1080 monitors.
