Futuristic Sex Robots Now Just "Sex Robots" 602
High-C writes "With apologies to Futuristic Sex Robotz, the future is here, and her name is Roxxxy. Truecompanion.com has revealed their answer to the Real Doll, and it looks nice. The site is short on details, pictures, pricing info, but wow." NOTE: some of the above links are not work-safe, for many values of work. I stopped by this exhibit today at the AVN Expo (not officially a part of CES, but by curious coincidence scheduled to coincide; the old saw that porn drives tech isn't without merit). Roxxxy, though, was rather unsexily posed on a couch, not moving a bit — downright creepy, in fact.

I highly recommend using a proper lube instead of lotion. I like a water/glycerin/glycol product, like Astroglide. I have a (lady) friend who likes petroleum jelly. (Available in a tube if you go this route. I find the tub gross.)
I think you'll find much better lubrication and sensation. As a bonus, with the water based products cleanup is easier.

People can customize "true companion" personalities and then share the programs with others online on the company's website, according to Hines.
"Just think about wife or girlfriend swapping without actually giving the person to someone else," Hines said. "You can share the personality online."
Inspiration for the sex robot sprang from the September 11, 2001 attacks, when planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon and an empty field in Pennsylvania.
"I had a friend who passed away in 9/11," Hines said. "I promised myself I would create a program to store his personality, and that became the foundation for Roxxxy True Companion."

For what it's worth, in the latter robot novels, the three laws were not a set of rules that robots couldn't break, but rather a hierarchy of needs to drive their actions.
Basically, why would a robot want to do anything? Why not just sit there and relax all day?
Psychologist have proposed a hierarchy of needs for people. You get off your ass because you need to make sure you eat and survive. Once you got that you make sure you're safe and comfortable. If you got that you find friends, a mate/fall in love. etc.
Asimov's first robot novel (Caves of steel) did include the three laws as unbreakable laws, but later (robots of dawn, etc) he instead stated that they were the reasons robots even moved or acted. Their AIs were based around wanting to protect humans, once that's done, they want to follow order, and if they got that they want to keep themselves safe. It's their deepest instincts, their reason to be.
It wasn't against the law to make a robot without the three laws. The problem was that nobody knew how to do that and have the brain still be stable. It was stated that it would take over a hundred years to develop non-three-laws AIs from scratch.
So, it's not like they want to do their thing and be resentful about having to obey humans. They might be annoyed at doing things that humans want just like we'd be annoyed at having to eat, breathe, have friends and to never shoot ourselves in the head.
Not saying you don't know this, but it's just a pet peeve of mine. Hollywood seems impervious to this resoning :)

I've always felt that what will finally bring debate to all the "think of the children" insanity involving porn/pedos/drawn images/etc. will be the development of realistic gynoids capable of sex. It won't matter who invents them first, even if it's a country and/or company that won't make a child model available, someone will do it (if nothing else there would be a great market for a schoolgirl one in Japan). And once that happens the "think of the children" zealots will of course instantly condemn it as virtual child abuse. But this time there'll be a lucrative market (that's very obviously not harming anyone, much less a child), so there will be more support for fighting back. (In particular companies selling non-child sex gynoids will have a vested interest in not allowing any type of sex gynoid to be banned by legislation, because they know there's plenty of zealots that'd want to see them ALL banned.) And all this will bring the debate out into the public, and most of the public's going to start wondering about the zealots trying to ban the child gynoids. In my experience many, probably most, people already think many of the laws are crazy, but no one wants to stand up publicly and oppose them for fear of being labeled a pedophile. Well when companies are willing to oppose the zealots, and being labeled a pedophile means you just like kids but have sex with a robot, people are going to be less worried about speaking up.
Or at least I hope so, because I'd hate to think the zealots are always going to win the day. There's already been too damn many laws passed that restrict stuff that doesn't even remotely harm a child, but could accidentally ensnare unsuspecting adults for my taste. I'm sick of it myself, and I know all my friends are too.
