From the article: "Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), also called W-CDMA, is one of the 3G mobile standards jockeying for position in Europe. First introduced into the UK by 3 in 2003, it is sometimes called 3GSM as it is a 3G tech designed to replace GSM. UMTS has the potential to support 11Mbps data transfer rates and can be used for things like mobile videoconferencing."
