Yeah... that meme is getting old. Some of us are married over 20 years now. I started reading /. in 2000. Lost my older UID when I left for a few months, came back, but couldn't recover my password because I no longer worked at the company that owned the email address I registered with. UID name I'm using dates back to the mid-'80s. Some of us have been around a while.

As a 30-something who read /. in the early days but had no experience to comment from; I had linux 3.5" floppies from bootleg books I got in NYC, the nearest LUG was over an hour away, I could read code but hadn't written any yet. Why comment when I knew how out of touch I was? Eventually registered this UID because my main net name was taken (maybe I did register from one of those long lost 'free pop3 accounts") and used a new persona I had just created for anonymouse purposes.

Bedtime beer is nasty, like having a coffee to settle down at night but worse. It has an initial sedative effect but completely fucks up the resulting sleep. Not recommended.

I can have beer (1 or 2) before bedtime, but I don't more because of the effects on my waistline. Much easier to keep the weight off (lost 30 pounds last year and kept it off with the no alcohol near bedtime plan).

I don't get this. Seriously, beer makes me lose weight. The alcohol increases metabolism and hence carbohydrate burn, and the dehydration it causes reduces fluid retention.

Usually Australian craft ales. I don't eat much - in fact I'm hungry most of the time. My diet is pretty "clean" too apart from the beer - mostly vegetables and lean meat, not much else.

When it comes to late-night brainfood, vs. most of the above, I'd rather listen to a nice old radio show, or a nice new podcast (like Penn Jillette's "Sunday School"). I don't know if it actually helps my insomnia, but it could be worse. I did make a mistake, though, in listening to the Mercury Theater production of Dracula, thinking it would just be quaint and campy. Not so -- as good as a horror movie, which is why I was listening to it late on Hallowe'en night ...

If not one of the above, I'll go to sleep listening to the sound of a movie -- The Big Lebowski, say. It's fun to play back the visuals on a movie that you've seen, letting the audio trigger the images, or try to make your brain create new visuals for the same sounds / dialogue.

I chose Internet but I often find myself watching old BBC shows I never saw before or knew about but never watch such as QI, 8 Out of 10 Cats, or ones I really like such as The IT Crowd (normally I watch a TV show or movie and never watch it again).
Anything that is a bit old and there are lots of it so I can go through it one by one.

DS9 is, in my opinion, the absolute worst of the entire ST franchise. I have just finished a 3+ year on/off challenge to watch the entire franchise (every series and movie except for the cartoons) - TNG was tiring, Voyager was brutal; oh, man - but DS9 - I gave up 3 times. Bad acting, crappy plots, characters it was impossible to care about - until Vic Fontaine! The bright spots for me were the Vic Fontaine eps; just too little, too late. Yes, my son and I used to watch that series, what was it, "Spenser"? There was one line he delivered so badly in an ep that it became what is now called a meme in our family, trotted out often in response to various queries; "The day is short; your client's money is long; the question shall be answered." in that clipped monotone that he used, followed by bared teeth.

Later on they spun off a short lived "Hawk" series from "Spenser:For Hire", but my point was he's a good enough actor that you look at Sisko and never see Hawk, and vice-versa.
"Far Beyond The Stars", where's he's 'negro' syfy writer Benny Russell is some fabulous TV.

Start with the first ever Doctor Who. Make sure you take a break between episodes to get the cliffhanger effect. There's audios of all missing episodes. Include all of the Big Finish stories for the Eighth Doctor and the Pertwee Radio Episodes, plus the first three Stranger and Miss Brown for the missing season, plus the Auton trilogy, plus the PROBE series.
If you are still alive after all that, I suggest you follow that up with both Ivor the Engine series, Sapphire and Steel (TV and Big Finish), The Tomorr

My wife and I enjoyed watching the whole series together. She'd never had the chance, and I missed entire chunks of seasons so it was definitely fun for me. We put off watching the last episode for months because she didn't want to see it end.

I voted 'TV show' bit I meant Documentary. And currently I'm trying to reinstall the rule not to watch a screen an hour before going to bed. Watching lit-up screens makes your brain go all Weeee! because of the blue light screens emit. So I read the paper, stroke the rabbits or potter around the house a bit before going to bed. Nothing physically or mentally straining of course. And I drink warm liquids, like tea or hot milk (chocolate or anise).

The biggest thing I miss from CRTs is the ability to dim them below "actually still pretty bright". The only LCD I've seen that actually gets fairly dark is the one on my camera.
